The purpose of this essay is to reflect on skills that I have performed whilst on my placement namely manual measurement of blood pressure, Body temperature measurement and blood glucose monitoring. I will use Gibbs (1988) model of reflection on all three skills as a way to improve my practice. Gibbs model of reflection was chosen as is easy to follow by beginners {1} as involves six stages namely: description, feeling, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan. Throughout this essay name of the placement or patients will not mentioned and will be replaced with the pseudonyms X,W, P in order to maintained confidentiality in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC 2015 Code of Conduct. Reflective Account 1 (850): Manual Measurement of blood pressure Description I was asked by my mentor if I am confident to perform a manual blood pressure measurement. The patient was a 68 years old gentlemen Mr X was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I have confirm to my mentor that I am confident to perform this procedure. I have start to perform the measurement ; after located his bronchial artery pulse I have start to inflate until I could not feel the pulse rate; I have deflate the cuff and add 30 mmHg at the estimate systolic pressure to find the point to inflate the cuff according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE 2011a) guidance . In order to maintain a healthy body temperature, the heat produced with in the body or absorbed from the environment must be balanced from the heat lost from the body. A normal body temperature is measured at 37 degrees.
1.1 We should always check equipment which we are going to use if it is safe and working properly, we should wear PPE every time we are undertaking any task, ensure that we are trained to do the task, we should keep the working place safe and clean. When we are about to take measurement from an person we need to make sure that the person know exactly what we are going to do and asking permission for the task we are about to do. Recording the task in the chart and keep it confidential to protect personal information during the course of our work.
2. Physiological state in defined as “the condition or state of the body or bodily functions”. This can be measured when we perform our observations. By measuring a patient’s respiratory rate, oxygen saturations, peak flow (in asthma patients), pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, core temperature, blood sugar, pupil reaction and Glasgow coma scale. All these combined measurement can give us an insight into the patient’s health or Physiological state.

This paper will look at the performance of blood glucose level (BGL) tests which was carried out during the clinical intensive workshops. This paper will firstly explore and discuss the value and importance of personal reflection in nursing in a health care setting and how personal reflection is a key component in the learning processes of an individual and how it improves skills. Secondly, this paper will identify blood glucose levels and reflect on how I felt I performed this skill during the clinical intensive workshop. Thirdly, discussing how I feel I preformed this skill and how constructive feedback allowed for me to improve my skill to overall result in faster and more efficiently BGL’s. Lastly, this paper will explore how I believe I can improve future BGL’s through improving my speed and how to become faster, this is through becoming more prepared prior to starting a BGL.

Reflection, criticism and self-evaluation in paramedic practice is paramount for educational and personal growth. Manual blood pressure techniques are compounded with many factors that may affect the measurement (Myers, 2010). Patient anxiety and poor blood pressure measurement technique by the health professional can result in a misdiagnosis and improper drug treatment (Myers, 2010).
In this essay I intend to reflect upon a clinical skill, which I have learned and become competent in practicing. I will apply the Gibbs model to the chosen skill throughout the essay to allow for critical thought. Gibbs model includes the areas of description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan. (Gibbs, 1988)
