I volunteered at the 12th Man Foundation Distinguished Dinner Event to learn more about Texas A&M University culture. A&M is one of the most prestigious public schools in the nation. It is known for teaching and training students to become capitalists in this industrial society we live in. It is also known for one of its core values, selfless service. To learn more about this particular core value, I completed fieldwork using a model known as participant-observation.
The 12th Man Foundation is one of departments at Texas A&M University. It exists to provide economic resources to athletes. The foundation contacts former students and asks them to donate money to the university. Once a year, the foundation hosts distinguished dinner which honors the people who have donated to the university. While I was at the event, volunteering, I was asked to sit next to a table with an empty green containers. Next to me was a board that stated, “80% will go toward South Carolina Flood Relief Funds and 20% will go to toward the local food bank.” The same people who have already donated millions of dollars to the school were expected to donate more. Being ethnocentric, I thought the foundation was asking too much. To my surprise, the former students started to come to the table with eagerness to give. Those who did not have cash or checks, turned away with grief faces. I comforted them by telling them that the foundation will continue to collect the next day at the football game. They thanked me and went on to enjoy the food and drinks at the event in relief.
A survey was conducted at Texas A&M University in which the “Big Five” traits of Psychology were measured. The focus of the research is to use descriptive statistics to determine the average personality across the Texas A&M University student body and compare the results to the average personality across the University of Texas student body. Descriptive statistics describes the data that the researcher is analyzing in terms of the average and variability of the sample. Two types of descriptive statistics exist to describe the data: central tendency and variability. Central tendency describes the average of a sample by interpreting the mean, median, and mode. Variability describes the difference in the set of scores through the interpretation of standard deviation, variance, and range.
Decisions made prior to the age of eighteen always seem like a crisis until you have met the mother of all crisis, your final college decision. I found myself staring my future directly in the face almost a year ago wondering where I would further my education just as much as the people pressuring an answer from me. After months of self deliberation, I set my sights on Prairie View A&M University for fall enrollment, albeit if you would have asked me just a few months before I would have turned my face up and dismissed the university as even an option. Stereotypes of universities that historically known as predominantly populated by black students skewed their image for me. Eventually, my outlook was enlightened through educating myself more
I contemplated several people for my second interview; nevertheless, the most logical person that I could interview was Dr. Cieslicka. I have always been fascinated with her European culture, and it became the logical decision. The interview was conducted in her office, and I was embarrassed at first, nonetheless, Dr. Cieslicka made me feel comfortable and at ease.
Bell, directly addresses the issue of Texas Tech student’s behavior at football games. Lane uses personal experiences to convey the impact that the student’s behavior had on her. Lane explains, “When the students started shouting obscenities and using derogatory body language, I became embarrassed to even be associated with their behavior.” Lane’s use of person experiences is effective as it turns the readers “idea” of an issue into a problem that has actually occurred.
Fall of 2015 was my first semester attending Los Angeles Valley College. My first time being introduced to an actual education unlike high school which was a complete depletion of effort because they deliberately advanced me despite my weaknesses and horrible grade point average at the end of high school. Not only was my mind vulnerable due to having that habit from high school which was turning in homework’s months late, never having to study because I’d be pass either way and homework’s, tests, weren’t even correct thoroughly. Besides not being prepared due to not being exemplified how to prepare, I stumbled across another issue where my trust was given and once again failed to thoroughly exhibit what was being presented. In this same
Tangible learning can be an excellent method of learning. Students who are able to take information from the classroom and apply in it the field can understand the how and why things are done the way they are. Moreover, Sax and Astin stated that service learning requires students to go out into their field and then return to relate their experiences via writings, discussions, or class presentations (Sax & Astin, 1997). I related to Sax and Astin with their characteristics of service participants. The authors claimed that a student who has longevity in volunteering, leadership and strong family commitment to their community are strong candidates to volunteering. My biggest inspiration for service comes from my father who spent 25 years as a volunteer fireman in our community. My childhood idolization of my father corroborated the authors claim that service participates are not to be motivated by materialistic values (Sax & Astin, 1997). Ultimately, Sax and Astin stated “during college, service participants exhibit greater increases in social self-confidence and leadership ability than do nonparticipants” (Sax & Astin, 1997). In relation to Sax and Astin I feel I have enhanced my interpersonal skills, confidence in dealing with people, and working in a profession that is not common for
Dedication and a Plan are two components needed to achieve my ultimate goals and hit milestones throughout my years at Texas A&M International University. However, growing up in a large household of six people with only one source of income is extremely difficult due to other expenses they are responsible to pay and the increasing amount of pressure my parents face every day will, unfortunately, become detrimental. Furthermore, my older sister is currently attending university but with a small amount of help from my parents who scrape up however much money they can. Moreover, both of my parents will not be able to help me pay for my college tuition for they are balancing a tremendous amount of bills to relieve themselves from an overwhelming
It is dehumanizing to make assumptions and determine how much help other people are entitled when the people’s lifestyles are not accounted for at all. The givers cannot stipulate another person’s worth without knowing the person. While one can only give within reasons, there are more that one can do to endorse their support for people in need or humanitarian organization(s). Helping cannot be based off of how much someone deserves. Givers need to give to the best of their
On March 10, 2017, I boarded a plane bound for San Francisco amid the hustle and bustle of spring break travel traffic. However, this was no regular spring break vacation, filled with relaxation and carefree experiences. In fact, I was only going to be the Golden City for thirty-six hours, and I was on my way to the national conference being held by the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs. As one of their two national scholarship recipients for the 2016-2017 school year, I was invited to attend the conference in order to publically accept my scholarship and was encouraged to attend any panels I wished. As suggested by the name of the organization, the conference was centered on community college education programs and teaching in general. When I arrived on Friday, the only event being held was a networking reception, where I met individuals from various community colleges around the nation. However, Saturday was a much more eventful day, with my spending eight hours at the conference.
Texas A&M constantly reminds me and encourages the students to be a part of something bigger than themselves. This is important because it gives each student a feeling of responsibility to leave this campus better than they found it. At most colleges the students only have the common ground of attending the same university, however at Texas A&M its more than just a university but rather a family. This is one of the major aspects that brought me to A&M, I had heard about the Aggie family and how it is unlike any other college in the nation. In my years here, I have experienced the Aggie family and watched how strangers are bonded just knowing they make up a family together. Each member of a family has responsibilities to help out and serve their
rate in the previous year; falling in line with the divisions mission and vision. In addition, the department developed and presented housing and food service presentations to 12,000 students. This program allows to division to meets its mission of providing educational opportunities to students. The division also reaches across the aisle to other departments and host the Longhorn Neighborhood resource fair alongside 23 other divisions. These are a few examples of how the University of Texas at Austin’s student affairs department supports its students by providing the best innovative programs and services. As for the departments vision, the university has lunched HornLink, an online student portal that is geared towards uniting students with student organizations. Through Texas Parents, the department also host six family orientation sessions per year and three inaugural transfer sessions to welcome new families.

The first thing that came up to my mind while writing this reflection paper, is to read the personal statement, which I have wrote while applying for Texas A&M two years ago. I wanted to know what was the real motivation behind my choice and how did it change after completing one year of studying urban planning at Texas A&M. Besides, comparing between my previous and current perspectives will help me understand how Homan readings reinforced or changed my beliefs. This is an attempt to resolve the issues between Terry and Bill, who have two children. The first child is Dawn, and she is having trouble adjusting to the lack of attention from her parents. The parents are traditional, where as the father works and the mother stays at home. Both her parent used to be extremely focused and attentive on Dawn; subsequently, her sibling, Darren has congenital heart problems. Darren require more attention, and the parents are having difficulties paying for his medical need, as a result Dawn is lonely without her parents. Her father works long hours to pay for Darren’s abundant medical costs, and her mother is so tired of bills and caring for Darren that she expect Dawn to be a grownup; nevertheless, Terry assumes Dawn is much more mature than Darren. They are high and unreasonable expectations for Dawn. (Broderick and Blewitt, 2014).
Seeing that Prairie View A&M University is a small campus consisting of about 9,000 students you would believe that they are doing a lot of eco-friendly things, such as using energy efficient bulbs and having recycle bins placed near every trash can on campus. Becoming more sustainable can go way beyond the little things; the campus can install solar panels or installing a green roof. Solar panles use light energy from the sun to generate electricity through this effect called the photovoltaic effect. Installing solar panels can be very expensive, but in the end it’ll save the college a lot of money on their electricity bills. Solar energy is non polluting and it is emission free while generating electricty. Another advantage of using solar
