Southwest Asia is home to a variety of cultures as well as religions. It has an significant past with three major religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. It is quite remarkable that Southwest Asia has been a holy place for all three, and although it causes turmoil it is important to understand the three religions and their customs. Such information may help us not to judge so quickly or perhaps to grow in our knowledge about the world. Hopefully this will help everyone to have a wider view of the world than just the town they reside in or even the country they live in.

The three most popular religions in Southwest Asia are Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. These religions have similarities like they all believe in God but different ways. There are different ways these religions worship God. There are many holy days in these religions that get celebrated. The holy books that these religions read are similar in a way but different in many ways. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism could come in conflict with each other because one religion won’t agree with what the other religions are teaching.

The three major religious of Southwest Asia are Christianity, Judaism and Islamic. Christianity was born first from the Jews. Then Islamic developed from both Christianity and Jewish. All three of these religions were born in the Middle East and even though they are different they all are connected to one another.

Judaism originated close to four thousand years ago in the region of Canaan. It’s heritage traces back to God giving his commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Judaism is based off of the Torah-the Jewish holy book. The Star of David, also known as Shield of David, represents Judaism. In Judaism, women are separate but equal; they believe that women are equal to men, as it states in the Torah, but women aren’t allowed to do the same jobs as men. As for the demographics of Judaism, 13.3 million people in the world are Jewish and the majority of them live in Diaspora. Yom Kippur is the most sacred day of Judaism; in this holiday, Jews fast, pray and repent for 25 hours. Along with Yom Kippur; Chanukkah and the start of Passover are also important in the Jewish holidays. Judaism is similar to Christianity and Islam as they only believe in one God, and Jesus’ crucifixion. Judaism and Islam are strictly monotheistic. Unlike Christianity and Islam, Judaism believes that God has divine revelation and forgiveness. They call their God Yahwen.

Judaism history, beliefs, and traditions were recorded in the Hebrew bible as early as the 8th century B.C. and is considered one of the oldest religions that still exists today. There are 3 main branches of Judaism: Orthodox; Conservative; and Reform. Orthodox focuses on the traditional teachings of the Jewish law, while Conservative Jews allow a little bit of change to help them adapt to society. Then Reform Judaism believes that there should be a lot of change and adaptation to the modern world today. Additionally, Judaism is one of the three Abrahamic Religions. The Abrahamic Religions include Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. There are approximately 14 million people who identify themselves as Jews. Most of them live in the U.S. and Israel. The state of Israel was founded in 1948. Jews are the descendants of an ancient people called the Hebrews. The Hebrews’ country fell to a series of conquerors and the Jews scattered across the world. The eastern religions that we have discussed in class are Hinduism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The western religions that we have discussed in class are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The Eastern Religions have originated in countries such as China, India, and Japan. The western religions originated in Europe and the Americas. There are few similarities between eastern religions and western religions, but many differences. The biggest difference between the two religions is that eastern religions believe in more than one god, whereas western religions believe in one God.

Judaism, which originated in the middle east, is one of the oldest religions in the world. Judaism is the religion from where Catholicism and Islam have their roots. The main difference between Judaism and the previously mentioned religions is that Judaism is based on the old testament entirely excluding the new testaments in its teachings. Jews believe that they are the people chosen by God and that because of the covenant they have the duty, more than any other group of people, to keep the law of God. The law of God in Judaism comes in the form of the Torah. The books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, which are said to have been written by Moses, form the Torah.

Last but not least, Judaism comes from the Hebrew word Yehudah meaning Judah. It is the religion and way of life for the Jewish people. Judaism is considered to be the oldest religion. The Hebrew Bible is called the Torah. A synagogue is their place of worship and their services are led by a rabbi. You can be born Jewish or you can convert. There are 14 million Jews worldwide. About 42% are in Israel and about 42% are in the U.S. The remaining Jews are spread worldwide. The spoken language of the Jews is Hebrew. Men wear a small beanie on their head called a kippa while praying, eating or saying blessings. Jews have kosher diets. They can eat chicken and turkey but not pig.
