Have you ever had an assignment in school that was just too difficult to do on your own? Maybe you’ve had a few practices to go to. Sometimes, multiple things that you have in school will surprise you enough that you may have stress. Multiple things that get you caught up in school can be such a hassle, but afterwards, when the situation is over, your stress is done and removes one, or a few things off of your plate. Stress a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Stress can be caused by multiple things thrown at you at once, like example, when I was in high school, I had all of my classes, my homework from each class, extra-curricular classes, my friends and family, etc. Stress can take over someone’s life in a snap but you can get out of it, it takes time and patients. Stress can make a person unhappy as well. With one of my experiences with stress in high school was all of the homework i have been getting, mostly math homework. Homework for me was, and is still very stressful. I would always put it all off until the last second. That sure was a mistake. Sure, i would finish them all in time, but i was stressing about how i wouldn't get to turn it in on time as well. Like, my experience in math class in high school, i was very bad at the math skills that were taught to the class. When i would get the homework, i would usually try it, but if i ever got a problem wrong i would always stress out about it, but then i would keep telling myself that i could do it. So, i did some of the problems, until, i got distracted by other things, like checking things on my laptop, or even talking to people. The day that the assignments would be due, i would try and quickly finish the work before the teacher came over to my groups table, which never really worked. But, when the year started winding down, and i noticed my grade was dropping, i decided to actually get my work done on that day, or on the next day. So that's one way of how i got rid of my stress. Actually doing the work given to me! I've experienced stress all of my life, another example of this is how in highschool, i was part of two choirs, Concert choir and Madrigals. Now this sums
Student stress levels are beginning to rise due to the increasing academic competition, which is the competition of high grades and being a well-rounded student in all aspects. High school students are beginning to involve themselves in more extracurriculars and service learning opportunities, and when added to the workload of assignments, projects, outside jobs, and any personal events happening, it can begin to overwhelm the student if they are unable to manage their time correctly. With an increase of constant stress, many physical and mental illnesses can be a result. Since mental illnesses are not being discussed in the education system, teachers often do not factor in any outside stressors that can be on a student throughout their school year. Without the consideration of the outside stressors teachers create lesson plans that would require students to accommodate their classes into their schedules in order to keep up with the academic competition. Students may have outside jobs on a daily basis and may not be able to manage the workload given by their teachers such as assignments that are due at a specific time. Although some teachers may be flexible and accommodate to students schedules, it may not accommodate to everyone’s which then leads to the problem of stress due to the inability to turn an assignment in on time or not finishing the assignment.
In this day and age, due to heavy homework loads, difficult classes, high maintenance social lives, and extracurricular activities, students can experience exceeding levels of stress during the school year. As the 2017-2018 school year starts, teenagers everywhere are coming to the realization that school has started and it’s time to learn again. School has reached a point where it is fundamentally a job, and a teen balancing all aspects of their lives can be tremendously difficult. Whether it’s not getting enough sleep, not completing classwork, or being under constant pressure to do well, students all around the world deal with the hardships school brings.
Do you ever get an agonizing feeling when you have multiple assignments and tests to study for? Do you dwell over this exhausting consciousness? Yes, this is the well-known perception of stress and anxiety. Feeling overpressured in a school setting, at home, and fearing that these students will not get into or fail out of college has consumed teenagers minds.
As a junior in high school there are numerous stressors that are dealt with on a daily basis; grades, social interactions, and the work involved for classes that I am scheduled to attend. Junior year is a critical year, not only due to the high intensity of the curriculum, but also because of SATs, ACTs, and other college preparatory work that is not required in previous years of schooling. Another stressor of my junior year, is the fact that all of my courses are either honors, advanced placement, or college level courses, and I am involved in multiple extracurricular activities, making my schedule very tightly packed. Although some high school students may begin high school with one set of stressors and end with a completely different set of stressors, my stressors have remained relatively the same, with a few exceptions.
Whether it 's from arguing with your teenager or getting stuck in traffic, stress is an inevitable part of life. With so much on our schedules and so little time to get things done, we feel stretched to our
An interview with Tracey Williams about stress was very eye opening on how students could deal with these things in their life’s. Tracey Williams was asked if students go to her for stress. She had said that yes, a lot of students go to her for stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are the main reasons why students visit her. Tracey Williams believes that stress cannot be “solved” within one session with her. Especially huge emotional stress. This kind of stress is hard to pinpoint so what Tracey will do is get her patients to open up to her so she can find what is exactly causing the stress in their life’s. Then after what is causing the stress is pinpointed then she will tell them to either cut back on hours at work or maybe even cut back on hours at school. The advice she gives them is depending on each and every student so not all of the advice can help every single student. “There is not just one single “bullet” to get rid of
There are many things that cause stress for a college student. Stress can affect the performance of a student in many ways, such as loss of sleep, little or no appetite, low self-esteem, depression, or even lack of motivation to keep moving forward. Most, if not all, students in college experience being stressed at one point, because of a school project, a final exam, or maybe even turning in homework. It’s not the work that stresses many people out, it’s the time available to complete the work. Although we have all the time in the world to complete something, it sure doesn’t feel like it when your time gets limited. Especially if the project or homework determines the grade you get in class. In college, a project, test, or homework can make you or break you.
“Today's students may be more stressed than ever before. In fact, the 2015 American College Health Association National College Health Assessment found that 85.6 percent of students had felt overwhelmed in the past year. The pressures of getting top grades, balancing extracurricular activities with studying, and spending time with family all add up,” (Carlson). Statistics show that students’ stress levels are rising and the newly found stress causes negative effects. Surveys and studies have shown that the stress has come from the school system and its attributes. The extreme levels of stress are the main foundation for many issues to sprout and cause problems for the students. Besides causing issues, the stress teenagers have led them to deplorable outlets that hurt them in the long run. The research shows, that the high school setting is the cause of teenagers being extremely stressed out, the stress causes issues, and it has caused them to turn to destructive outlets.
Although stress stress isn’t always a negative aspect, in extreme situations, it can prove to be very unhealthy. The American Psychological Association has found that “Teens report that their stress level during the school year far exceeds what they believe to be healthy…” The association also says that “Many teens also report feeling overwhelmed (31 percent) and depressed or sad (30 percent) as a result of stress.” The stress that students are experiencing is not the problem as much as the consequences that come from it. Depression and lack of motivation can result from too much pressure upon students, and these negative side effects can cancel any of the positively intended effects.
There is a big blood curdling beast all people are forced to face when they reach their teen years: high school. Although high school is intimidating, it is one of the most important times in a person's life. It is a time for teens to find a sense of identity and figure out what they want for their future. Unfortunately, those things can cause a lot of stress for these adolescents. When the weight of getting older and running into new responsibilities is met with the pressures of school, it can get very overwhelming. In school today, students are pushed to work more quickly and accurately than ever before because there is more emphasis on success; oftentimes, emotions are cast aside. Sadly, this has become the norm for high schools. Due to physical and mental illnesses and classical conditioning, schools should create a more supportive and understanding environment for their students to give them a bigger chance of success.
If you were to take a survey from any high school or college on whether or not their student body feels overwhelmed by school, you will find that eighty-three percent of the responses show that today's students feel an immense amount of strain because of school and do not know how to cope with it (Shapiro). In recent years, the rise in stressed-out students could be considered a silent epidemic, having as many as 1 in 5 students showing signs of a mental illness. (Anderson). The case is that many students are feeling greatly pressured to stay at the top of their class, meaning they have to compete against and compare themselves to other students. They have to complete all of their homework, study for tests, and try to fit down-time into their schedules after school. That is, if they do not have band practice, training for sports, or clubs to attend in order to increase the number of extracurriculars for college applications. It can be overwhelming for a student who is struggling with an ample amount of stress due to school on their own. If the student was left unnoticed and continued to exhibit unhealthy ways of coping with stress, they could start to see a drop in their overall physical and mental health, or worse, develop more severe stress, leading to depression or anxiety. Schools should implement programs to help students cope with stress because they are usually the first support outlet that teens reach out to and it is best to get
Stressed? I understand how it feels. There’s always too much to do, yet another deadline, are too many people demanding your attention, and of course, money is always a little tight. These are all examples of things that cause stress that everyone goes through every single day. They all effect people in different ways. Some people react a lot more extremely than others and some people are able to shrug it off a little easier. Most people find different activities to help deal with their stress levels to make them more manageable, so they can continue with their day to day life. In “Techniques for Managing Stress”, Paul M. Insel and Walton T. Roth say, “People who manage stress effectively are not only healthier, but they also have more time to enjoy life and accomplish their goals” (1). The rest of this essay with focus on some of my day to day stressors and the remedies I have developed to help me relieve my stress. Work, money, and time are three of my biggest stressors that put me in my worst moods. My stress relieving activities consist of woodworking projects and playing disc golf.
Teens have to deal with a lot in their everyday lives but one thing that most students almost always have to deal with is stress. Stress can come from about anything that individual person finds hard, frustrating, or scary. There are many effects to have heavy stress on yourself, all the way from just having minor stress sweat to having long term effects such as chronic depression.
Stress is a normal part of life for many high school students. The school year is full of stressful situations and events. There are many different causes of stress, from homework to sporting events. Between retain good grades and teachers like Mr. Gibbons, some students feel like they can never seem to catch a break. However, very few of them know that their personality is a leading factor in their stress. Depending on the type of personality they are, their stress level could be higher or lower (Dumitru & Cozman 2012).
Stress may come in two ways. Normally, it may be triggered by specific things or events like “personal issues”, work and
