The 2015 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge concluded in June, and Team KAIST from South Korea took the championship title with its robot DRC-HUBO. The winning team hails from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and managed to defeat 22 other teams from around the world to bring home the top prize of US$2 million. The DARPA Robotics Challenge was launched in response to a humanitarian need that became glaringly clear during the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. South Korea has just made headlines for its superiority in robotics technology, but other countries in Asia have also started turning to robotics to boost productivity and wow the public with some head-turning inventions.
"Slam" by Walter Dean Myers is a book that shows a collection of styles of writings, and different techniques used by the author. There were many great characters in the book, also. This book is about a seventeen year old boy named Greg, who revolves around the game of basketball. He lives in Harlem and attends the prestigious magnet school Latimer in the South Bronx, which is predominantly white. He leads the school to great wins, even his former school. His best friend Ice starts to sell drugs, so they drift apart. When his grandmother got sick, his assistant coach became a fatherly mentor to him. He expresses that the game of life can either be won, or it can be lost.
The most important and fun extracurricular activity I participate in is being a member of a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Team. I first entered a robotics team in the eighth grade, participating in a similar program called FIRST Lego League (FLL). Before FLL, I had no idea about what I wanted to be when I grow up and frankly, I had no ambition. After being introduced to robotics in 2013, it has become my #1 passion in which I spend around an average of 4-6 hours per week - sometimes even more during the peak season.
Competitive robotics competitions have been around for many years to motivate people towards education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In addition, this has sparked competitions at the university level to enhance the effectiveness of learned material. Two popular types of competitions are for sumowrestling and soccer playing robots. These competitions have led to advanced robot designs with navigation algorithms utilizing some combinations of image processing, artificial intelligence, crisp logic, fuzzy logic, and various sensors to allow robots to play a game autonomously. In the game of sumo-wrestling, the goal is for a robot to push its opponent out of a circular-shaped arena.
Hence, in 2012, I was part of the small group of students that founded the first robotics club in school. We constantly challenged each other and enrolled in multiple competitions. In the club´s first three years, we were determined to not surrender and learn from our failures to achieve success. Despite initially struggling to work together, costing us one competition, we learned how to complement each other’s strengths and become Guatemala´s best robotics team, placing in the top 3 in all competitions. In our last competition as a team, we won the Latin American championship in the VEX robotics category.
During my sophomore and junior year, I joined the FTC Robotics Team. I was one of the programmers and builders for the robot. I will help the team build the robot and after the robot is done, a group of students and I would program the robot to do some specific tasks. After we are done building and have programed the robot we compete against other schools. During competition, we would meet with other teams and form allies. We operate robots to compete in a challenge with the teams we are allied with.
The team members of S.A.W. all come from different backgrounds, yet they all have a profound interest in very similar things. Dahmin Branch is an eleventh grader who’s involved in sports programs, such as basketball, while also being involved in academic programs, such as the National Honor Society. However, through all of this, he has developed a profound interest in fixing computers and designing video games. This has encouraged him to be a computer engineer and a video game designer five years ago and he is still committed to accomplishing that goal today. Marquise Harris is an eleventh grader who simply loved to tinker with broken technology and play with it when he was a young child. He considers fixing things fun and interesting. When he fixed his old computer, he felt like his fate was sealed.
Disasters like earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes happen almost everyday. It takes help from first responders to get those in the disaster area to safety. But this puts the lives of who perform rescue missions at risk as well. In the November 2014 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine, Davey Alba’s article, “A Robot for Any Disaster,” is unsuccessful in convincing the readers of this idea through the limited use of pathos and redundant use of logos.
Over the last decade people have be relying more and more on technology to do simple things. For example the E-Rover was made for people wouldn't have to walk. E-Rover is a burden on society because it contributes to our society to becoming more lazy.
Team 2470 may not be the most organized team: the robot’s main components may go on in the last hours, tape drawers hold everything from pliers to saws, and metric-sized bolts may cause everlasting annoyance in their perennial placement on the robot. Still, this team has the right combination of quirks and science to ignite the fire of inspiration in its students and mentors. Team 2470’s fight to create and keep robotics as a sport for everyone has lasted through the years. They have not weathered the years completely alone, as they have grown a large community of support. Traversing outside of their cozy robotics room, this team has gone out to the community to shine. While this team cannot boast an assembly-line process, they can boast their inspiring influence.
Our robot performed well this past weekend and I think we should be all proud that we did not have any on field mechanical problems that effected our play.
In the article, “Goodbye Rio, hello robots: Expect high-tech cool at 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” the author Emiko Jozuka states the high-tech technology that will be at Tokyo 2020, the improvements they’ll make, and why Tokyo is a good place for the Olympics.
Robotics and artificial intelligence are two separate things. Robotics involves building robots whereas AI involves programming. Artificially intelligent robots are the connection between robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Artificially Intelligent robots are robots that are controlled by Artificially Intelligent programs. There exist a wide range of robots that are not artificially intelligent. Up until quite recently, all industrial robots could only be programmed to carry out a repetitive series of movements. Repetitive movements do not require artificial intelligence. Robots that aren’t artificially intelligent are quite limited in their functionality. AI algorithms are often necessary to allow the robot to perform more complex tasks. An example of a non-Artificially Intelligent robot is the Cobot. The Cobot can easily be programmed to pick up objects and place them elsewhere. The Cobot will continue to pick and place objects in the same way until it’s turned off. The Cobot is an autonomous function because the robot does not require human’s input after it has been programmed. Though it does all that it does not require any intelligence. Yet, the Cobot can be improved by using Artificial Intelligence. By adding a camera to the Cobot, we are making it artificially intelligent. This concept is considered as perception in Artificial Intelligence. For example, if we wanted the Cobot to detect the object it was picking up and place it in a different location it would
Recently DBR released their advanced robotic prototype at an international tradeshow. Industry experts have termed this prototype as the most advanced robotic system and also suggest that this prototype is at least 5 years ahead of what DBR’s competition has to offer. Because of this reason, DBR fear that their competitors could try and steal their
The robot had been out for 24 hours now and already Jasper has lost his family from the explosions. All 4 of them were dead except for him. He was alone and the frigid night air had engulfed him in chills as he lay on the hard, burned ground. The robot….the robot was originally a government project. Then the AI nuclear robot went rogue, escaping the facility where the tests were being run and started blowing everything up across Dead Creek, Farem, the capital of the Government.
A hydraulic robotic arm, operating using water must be designed, built, and be tested in approximately two and a half weeks. The entire project consists of detailed design sketches with project notes, numbered parts made on a CAD program, bill of materials and a working prototype.
