Tim Burton is a very famous director that has many exceptional works. Some of his greatest include: Beetlejuice, The Nightmare before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, (most all of them have Johnny Depp in them). There is a lot of talk going on right now about Tim Burton’s new movie, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”. Tim Burton is an incredible director with award winning films, so what makes this one any different? Burton’s newest movie is having quite the battle on Twitter. There has been an outrage because of the all-white cast in the movie. Everyone acting in the movie is white, except Samuel L. Jackson. Many people have been tweeting about how wrong Burton was for being so discriminating

In The Shallows by Nicholas Carr, he asserts that the evolution of information and communication technology (ICTs) is having a detrimental impact on our brains despite the many benefits and advances we have made with it. His main focus is on the internet which he commonly refers to as the “universal medium” (92). Carr presents a very detailed but biased argument in which he views the internet and other technologies as the adversary of critical thinking and progress. To Carr, we are sacrificing our ability to think logically because we are choosing a simpler way to gain knowledge.

In Alice Munro short story “Boys and Girls” is about a young girl confused in life about herself maturing into a young women that takes place on a fox farm in Jubilee, Ontario, Canada with her parents and her younger brother. The character of the young girl that is not specified by a name in the story is struggling with the roles that are expected by her peers of a young women in the 1940’s. This young girl has been helping her father on the fox farm for many years in which brought so much of a joy in her life. As she gets older, as well and as her younger brother Laird grows older, she is starting to realize that her younger brother will be soon be taking over the roles and responsibility of taking care of the animals. Then her mother and grandmother points out the anticipations of her to start acting more like how a young women of her age should present themselves and this has great emotional effects on her, and at the end of the story she shows a final act of disobedience against her father, but it only shows the thing she resist the most, her maturing into a young women and becoming her own person.

Nicholas Carr covers an unprecedented amount of material in his novel, “The Shallows.” He delves into subjects ranging from the history of the book to the business of Google to the psychological concept of neuroplasticity. All of these topics support his main argument: the idea that the internet is destroying our brains. He takes the deterministic approach that we are the tools we use, meaning they shape our brains. According to Carr, the internet negates our memories, deems print books useless, and distracts us from reality. His counterargument comes from the instrumentalist approach; this viewpoint maintains that people stay the same no matter the tools they use. His arguments are both sound and flimsy, current and outdated, and he rants

Laura Hillenbrand is an America author of magazine articles and books. Hillenbrand was born in May 5, 1967, in Fairfax, Virginia. She has written only two books Seabiscuit a New York Times bestseller, and Unbroken, both non-fictions. She is considering one of the best American writers. Her New York Times Article, “A Sudden Illness” won the 2004 National magazine award, and she has also won twice the Eclipse Award, one of the highest journalist honor. Her most recent book Unbroken tells the inspiring story of Louie Zamperini, the son of Italian immigrants.

Published June 1971,Octavia Butler’s science fiction narrative, Kindred, gives a glimpse into how life was for African Americans during slavery in the Antebellum South. Kindred serves as a time portal between the 1800s and the year 1976. As the main character Dana goes from an 1800’s plantation to her home in 1976 it is obvious that time period changed, however being that Dana is constantly back and forth between the two times, she is able to see exactly how drastic the change was and what liberties she took for granted by living in 1976.

Ibsen 's play A Doll 's House centers on a stereotypical and comfortable family in the nineteenth century which, outwardly, has the appearance of respectability to which any audience can relate. There are many indicators that reveal that this family upholds a false image, such as the symbolic title “A Doll 's House". Nora is introduced as a "little Spendthrift" (p 6), which foreshadows future tension in her relationship. Torvald believes she is spending money frivolously, but she has actually secretly borrowed money to save his life, and is using the money he gives her to pay back her debt.

A Doll 's House by Henrik Ibsen, is a play that has been written to withstand all time. In this play Ibsen highlights the importance of women’s rights. During the time period of the play these rights were neglected. Ibsen depicts the role of the woman was to stay at home, raise the children and attend to her husband during the 19th century. Nora is the woman in A Doll House who plays is portrayed as a victim. Michael Meyers said of Henrik Ibsen 's plays: "The common denominator in many of Ibsen 's dramas is his interest in individuals struggling for and authentic identity in the face of social conventions. This conflict often results in his characters ' being divided between a sense of duty to themselves and their responsibility to others." All of the aspects of this quote can be applied to the play A Doll House, in Nora Helmer 's character, who throughout much of the play is oppressed, presents an inauthentic identity to the audience and throughout the play attempts to discovery her authentic identity.

Claire Standish or “the princess” portrays the stereotypical popular teenage girl in The Breakfast Club. She is in detention with everyone else because she decided to skip class and go shopping, which also plays into the stereotypical teen girl image. It can also be assumed that she is spoiled and rich since her father tried to get her out of detention but failed, and she mentions to the group that her parents only use her to get back at the other one. She brings a fancy lunch of sushi while the other teens either have nothing or the standard lunch one’s parents might pack for them. There are a couple of times in the movie that she brings up her social standing and could even be considered as looking down on those who are not as popular as her. Even closer towards the end of the movie she informs the others that if they were to say hello to her in the hallway in front of her friends, she would have no choice but to ignore them. By the end of the movie, she has opened up to everyone else about her fears of letting her peers down and has formed a close relationship with Bender.

The novel, Girl, Interrupted is a memoir of author Susana Kaysen’s life and her journey through early adulthood as she suffered with Borderline Personality Disorder. The novel captures her time at McLean Hospital, a psychiatric hospital located in Belmont, Massachusetts. Kaysen divides the novel into separate anecdotes of events and fellow patients she encountered during the two years she was admitted at Mclean.

“The Little Shopgirls go to the movies” is a text written by Sigfied Kracauer which criticises the plot archetypes of films. He argues that their melodramatic and sensationalised premises are a reflection of how society is operating. This text was first published in 1927 when Kracauer was living in Germany working as a respected film critic. He was a member of the Frankfurt school of critical theory, therefore his work is strongly influenced by colleagues such as Theodor Aldorno, and also his teacher Georg Simmel (McCormick 99).

The film “Gone Girl” depicts the story of a man named Nick Dunne and the disappearance and possible murder of his publicly adored wife, Amy Dunne. The beginning of the film depicts this young couple to be passionate, vivacious and full of unconditional love, but as the story unfolds the truth behind Amy and Nick’s relationship becomes questioned under intense public scrutiny and a forensic investigation. Early on, Nick becomes the main suspect in his wife’s disappearance and apparent murder based on what seems to be overwhelming evidence indicating his guilt. Amy Dunne appears to be a beautiful, kind and intelligent woman. She exudes confidence, gracefulness and charm to the public, and portrays a sense of being calm, cool and collected with her husband upon the early stages of their relationship and marriage. Her beauty, clever wit and poised presence, paints the façade of an overtly desirable woman. However, in discovery of her husband’s affair and throughout the rest of the film, Amy’s true self and manipulative and devious nature emerges.

Gone Girl (written by Gillian Flynn) and The Girl on The Train (written by Paula Hawkins) are two mystery thriller novels and New York Times Best Sellers, both receiving ‘Goodreads choice Awards Best Mystery and Thriller’. Critics have addressed the newfound novel, The Girl on The Train as being a dub for Gone Girl, which was published three years prior to The Girl on The Train. The two of the books, have a story line basis to be classified as psychological suspense novels, typically containing the sense of crime or peril, centred on the main character’s unstable emotional states. The purpose of this lecture is to compare, contrast and evaluate the two texts, observing the effectiveness of the writers’ language choices throughout the books.

Nobody lives a perfect life, no matter who you are, how wealthy you are, or how great your life may seem. Everyone experiences their own struggles, significant or small. In the movie “The Danish Girl” struggle, pain, and growth are three of the most important factors. Through the story, Gerda shows extreme bravery by staying with Einar/Lili and supporting Einar while he was trying to discover himself. However, Einar/Lili was the braver character throughout the story because he/she dealt with the struggle of not knowing his true identity. Also, he/she was able to come out as his true self to such a disapproving world; proving Einar is the strongest character.

Amy Dunne at first expression is a nice, cool, stylish female who would be an ideal daughter and wife. She is her parents’ inspiration for a children’s book series called “Amazing Amy”, which was about a perfect girl who overcomes all obstacles that come her way. To her husband Nick Dunne, she is a dedicated wife, who loves him dearly, and struggles to make her marriage work. Okay now let’s give you the real Amy, analyzing her throughout the book it seems she should be diagnosed with Borderline personality disorders.
