Poetry in some way, shape or form, gives realistic ideas to even objects that reflect upon a part of life by using symbolism and personification.

Elizabeth Alexander, a black educator that teaches poetry, believes that poetry is where you are your true self and finding yourself. In 2005, she published one of her poems called “Ars Poetica #100: I Believe.” She constructed the poem to speak to her students about her meaning of poetry. In “Sympathy”, by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the author uses rhyme, imagery, and sensory language to help intensify the theme racism and the confined detained effect it has on the individual soul. Rhyme allows the reader to have a connection to the poem, through the affect it has on the sound of the poem, when read. Imagery is used to describe an event or thing, so that the reader can visualize a picture of what the author is trying to describe. In addition sensory language allows the reader to experience the poem through their five senses; sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. Using rhyme in poetry gives a poem a repetitious quality by sound, without repeating a phrase in a poem.

Every thought that a human being has is flooded with emotion. An emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. You can’t simply think without pulling your emotions into your thought process. There are four basic emotions with hundreds of sub emotions that come off of them. Humans are hardwired to feel every single one of those emotions. They are coursing through our brain every moment. Poetry is little lines of pure emotion. When a reader reads and understands these lines, it is like peering into the author's soul.

Poetry can evoke certain feelings from the reader and its audience. It pulls clear vibes from the way the poet wants to portray their work. Think of it this way, mood is the entire atmosphere of the literary piece. It can be interpreted in many ways. There's no right or wrong answer when it comes down to you and the emotions it awakens. The words in a poetry piece can evoke different ranges and varieties of feelings from the reader. Overall, it serves to stimulate an emotional situation.

In a sense, poetry is language condensed. Short sentences with great meaning that needs to be unpacked and unfolded in order to see what a phrase truly means. In music, both lyrically and cinematically, actions and words can have a deeper meaning than they initially carry and what can be assumed from a first glance over. Poetry makes people think. It isn’t as simple as its surface level may seem. In poetry everything has a meaning. The author placed a line there for a reason; it brings something to the story. After having my own chance to write my own poem, and also having to recite another poet’s poem, my perspective changed a bit on the whole concept of poetry. Now if someone were to ask me what poetry is and what it meant I would say poetry is a way to express ones self. Writing a poem is another way of showing whom you are and how you feel to people who don’t know you, or people who don’t know you well enough. It’s also a way to relax and release some stress. Poems also have rhythm. Rhythm is built from the accent and meter of a poem. Depending on how and when accents hit in words it creates an audible cadence. The pattern that is setup from this creates the meter. This is analogous to music. There are many parallels that can be drawn from music and songs to poetry. I this is why you can consider many songs to be poems that are set to music accompaniment. In fact going all the way back to the Odyssey we discover that many poems were actually meant to be sung instead of read. There are many ways to break down the rhythm and I haven’t spent the time learning what they are nor have I spent the time dissecting poems to discover their rhythm. I only know of rhythm from what I feel when I read a poem with rhythm. Because of my lack of understanding and comprehension I do not purposefully use rhythm in my writing and I do not plan to start either.

Poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm, poems collectively or as a genre of literature. It is also a quality of beauty and intensity of emotion regarded as characteristic of poems. Poetry (poem) is something that follows a particular flow of rhythm and meter. Compare to prose, where there is no such restriction, and the content of the piece flows according to the story, a poem may or may not have a story, but definitely has structured method of writing.
