Management Information Systems Versus Decision Support System: Know The Difference Over the last three decades, global business communities thrive on fluctuating demands, technological advancements, competitive business processes and a vibrant economic environment, resulting in an upsurge of the different information and support systems vital for business survival. Among the varieties of information systems are: Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision Support System (DSS), Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Knowledge Work Systems (KWS), Office Automated Systems (OAS) and so on. Each information system was designed for a specific purpose, playing different roles in decision making and organizational hierarchy, but depends largely on the needs of the business organization. Both systems can be utilized by managers and decision makers to come up with effective solutions to business problems, project future projects, develop business processes and ensure effective management. It is of vital importance though to contemplate which one is preferred over the other based on the specific needs of the company, enterprise or institution.
