Art has undoubtedly become a decisive aspect of our culture; embedded in the way we learn and grow on a daily basis. Art forms such as music, television and dance dominate our society as an outlet of freedom of speech for humanity. The evolution of music has rapidly exceeded its original classifications, developing new genres with greater appeal to an audience, hence its influence on society has expedited. In recent times, lyrics (specifically rap lyrics) have been introduced into the court room as a form of documented confessional evidence, evidently challenging law’s authoritative nature. This essay will closely follow the genre of rap and its relationship with law, through cases based in the United States of America (USA). In addition, the trial of Simon Bikindi in Rwanda and Smith v The Queen will be used to form an acute analysis on the influencing factors of relevance, identity, freedom of speech and current constitutional law.

For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Music has been apart of society for thousands of years and an outlet for people's stress and other problems they may be facing. It helps the brain function and understand conditions better by breaking it down and trying to comprehend it. Music has made and is still making an impact on the lives of people all around the world. Because of its impact on peoples lives neuroscientist wanted to get to the source and have been looking at the brain to determine the exact effects of music and they can now answer the question, what effects does music have on the brain? Listening to music can send pleasure to your mind, decide your emotions, lower stress, and improve learning.

Music is made up from rhythm and beats with notes and feelings, vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Yet, music is so much more than notes on paper, music represents movements in time, music is memories, history, connections, relaxation and escape. Many people are influenced by music they listen to. “Music is much more than mere entertainment. As a little kid, I have never been competitive, until I came in contact with the trumpet. When I join my middle school band I learned how to be the best at something and started to learned how to be competitive as I started moving up in high school and going to competitions. People very often describe a stereotype of certain groups of people pertaining to the music they listen to. For example, many people view hip-hop lovers as people who wear backwards hats and gold chains, or heavy-metal lovers as people who grow their hair long and wear gothic clothing. These are the principles mainstream singers like Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj are pounding into young people’s minds. Instead of directing their music negatively, these artists should try to encourage respectable behavior among our youth. I believe that the negative lyrics in many popular contemporary songs have a negative influence on the youth of America.

As I stare out among the crowd, I take a deep breath while getting lost in the melodies and harmonies of the music. This feeling that flows inside me is not only a physical feeling, but an otherworldly sensation. Music is the language that all people can understand, some can speak this language, but only a few can interpret this extraordinary communication. These few who can interpret this language understand it through different aspects of life, but here is how I see it. The importance of music has indeed waxed greater and greater through the centuries. From its use for story-telling, ceremonial purposes, social and religious practices, etc, there has been a great expansion of its uses. Majority of the masses do not realize this, but music has become an unavoidable part of our daily lives. With its use in movies, advertisement, shopping centers, elevators, buses, etc, not a day goes by without each person hearing some kind of music. As its forms have expanded so have its uses. Its undeniable effects over the human mind have not gone unrecognized by researchers and scientists. If people listen to this much music, there has to be a way to use it for good.
