Over the last decade and the advances in global communication, Internet speeds, and the availability of Smartphones, Laptops, and more memory in computers, online social networks have experienced huge amounts of growth, turning into robust multi-million dollar sites and receiving attention from politicians, marketing professionals of all types, educators and scholars. In fact, MySpace and Facebook, two of the more popular online networks in the United States, account for almost 10% of all Internet usage and have a huge growth of about 200,000 profiles daily (Tancer, 2007). This growth is so powerful that MySpace was sold in 2005 for almost $600 million, Microsoft purchased 1.6% of Facebook for $240 million in October of 2007 (Liedtke, 2007). Facebook posted a controversial and still unheard of Initial Public Offering in February 2012, causing a great deal of concern within the investment community, yet slowly recovering as of July 2012 (Levisohn, 2012). Based on the manner in which Social Networking has changed the manner in which marketers, politicians, and culture views interacting on the Internet, and the changes in behavior engendered by them, they can be defined as egocentric social groups (Boyd and Ellison, 2007). This trend, particularly in light of the media attention from the IPO, will likely assure Facebook's growth potential over the next few years, particularly using its library of user information and data.

Zuckerberg constantly had offers from different companies. Microsoft was one of the first companies to offer him money but he declined and walked away. Accel Partners invested $12.7 million into Facebook (Bio.com). Instead of accepting those offers he worked on expanding the site and adding more features. Zuckerberg had a big hurdle when Harvard Connection claimed that he had stolen their idea (Bio.com). The settlement reached between the two parties was $65 million over the legal dispute. Soon enough he finally opened Facebook up to the public in September 2006.

Being able to keep current with one 's personal group quickly and easily is one of the reasons SNS have become so mainstream (McKensie 436). The ability to communicate to a wide audience in real time has its benefits, such as maintaining friendships with people one would have otherwise lost contact with, giving shy people the ability to interact with others without feeling overwhelmed, and constructing new relationships with peers.
