Communication is essential whether you are a student, teacher, nurse, or an elected official. Communication is used to convey our thoughts, feelings, and information; this is why it is important to improve these skills. The purpose of this paper is to explain the actions I took to improve my communication skills which include eliminating verbal fillers and active listening. The situations that I have experienced will be reviewed. Next, I will recall that improvements that I have observed in addition to comments from my peers. After, I will describe unexpected opportunities and how I went about handling these. Following this I will identify obstacles and issues I encountered during my personal communication experiment.
Over the past five weeks I have attempted to improve my communication skills by eliminating verbal fillers. I started off trying to eliminate verbal fillers by role-playing the colleagues. This is a strategy that did not seem to work because as I was focusing on our conversations I did not use these verbal fillers. As I became aware of verbal fillers I noticed that use the more often when speaking to someone with authority or when I became nervous for example calling a physician at two in the morning because a patient had chest pain. With the help of colleagues identified which verbal fillers I use the most which included um and so. When speaking to physicians I would keep a tally of how many times I would use these verbal fillers. As I became aware of the
If you accept yourself as you are, you will be more likely to accept others as they are. If you can admit and forgive yourself for mistakes, you will be more likely to allow others to make mistakes and to forgive them as well.”(Sole, K. 2011 Making connections: Understanding interpersonal communication. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (https://content.ashford.edu). The next thing that we can do is practice our skills.” Finally, to improve your intrapersonal communication, you must practice the communication skills you have learned in this course. Participating fully in the course discussions, completing the exercises and activities in this text, and employing the tools you have acquired can help you take your communication skills to the next level.”(Sole, K. 2011).Making connections: Understanding interpersonal communication. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (https://content.ashford.edu). If I apply this skills that I have learn in these chapters to my everyday life, and try to get my fiancé to apply theses skills we both will improve our communication skills with each other and other.
Based on the positive and negative skills I learned in our group discussion, first, I decided to action plan to develop my skills in communication by, reading books about good communication skills. I think clarifying my objectives and finding common grounds are important for me to improve my communication (Baker, 2013). In other words, explaining what is the purpose of the conversation and building a good rapport with the other person while communicating. Therefore, I decided to find a way to reduce my fear and anxiety and talk confidently with my mentor, service users and other professionals, while I am out for placement (Rhodes, 2013).
Many people are not aware of the communication skills that they lack, most will argue that they have perfect communication skills. Taking interpersonal communication has taught me that my skills are very poor. I walked in thinking there was nothing I can learn about communication and realized that I know little to nothing about communication. Since starting this class I’ve narrowed the skills I need to work on to the following four which includes listening, being more supportive and active, understanding, and improving my self concept. Although all four of these skills are something I can improve I think listening is my main problem.
The ability to communicate effectively is essential to any instructor. Communication skills must be developed, they do not occur automatically. This stems from experience. Any instructor or healthcare provider must understand the process that is involved in communication and become aware of common barriers to effective communication. ( Effective-Communication, 2010). The basic elements of communication take place when one person transmits ideas or feelings to another person or group of people. The process of effective communication is composed of three elements which the first, the source (sender, speaker, and transmitter or instructor), second is the symbols used in composing and transmitting the message
By the time that I am working as a nurse, I plan to improve my communication skills by taking classes in college that focus on each skill. One example of a class like this is Public Speaking. Over time, my writing skills will improve as a result of writing multiple essays in my various classes. With every essay that I write, I will learn from my mistakes and not make the mistake the next time. Another skill that I can improve is listening. I can improve this skill by taking notes when a person is speaking to me; therefore I will not forget what they told me. I can also improve my listening skills by paying more attention to the speaker when they are talking. I can improve my listening skills anywhere, anytime, with anyone who is speaking. All of these skills and more are important in properly treating patients and giving them the correct
In an effort to accomplish my primary career goal of becoming a medical laboratory technician, I will need to ensure I communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. All aspects of life require communicating and interacting with other people either verbally, nonverbally, or in writing; however, in a professional work setting it is most important. Regardless the field of expertise, poor communication could be imperative to one’s career. For example, in a business setting, lack of communication could result in merchandises not being ordered; in a medical setting, a patient could die. No matter where one goes in life, the ability to successfully communicate with others is tremendously important.
Prior to my APPEs, I believe I need to improve on my communication skills. I think I have made considerable progress on improving this skill, but I believe I can do more to improve my communication skills in order to have good interaction with patients.
Well-developed spoken and written communication skills in a friendly and professional manner: Effectively dealing with a diverse range of people throughout the academic, volunteer and work life has developed my verbal communication skills to a high level. We as a healthcare professional having the incumbency to facilitate the interaction of people. The real communication requires the view of listener, to first understand the person needs and how we can help with. During many years as nursing assistant I witnessed the importance of nonverbal communications as a verbal communication to understand how hard can be miscommunications. As an Occupation Therapist, my goal is continuing in my learning process in order to achieve excellent communications skills in pro my professional e personal
Improving my communication skills will require me to first analyze how critical communication is to the success of my organization. There are several forms of communication. I will find myself utilizing a combination of communication avenues. My goal is to ensure that I am always well armed with knowledge so that I can always provide clear, concise, and correct information when questioned. I will work hard to articulate clearly what my expectations are so that others can easily meet goals. Achieving this goal will involve assessing possible communication barriers. These barriers can include non verbal communicators and misinformation. I can remedy the uprising of these potential communication pit falls by carefully wording written text such as emails, memos, and letters. Spell checks are essential to this as well. I can have someone listen to my speeches and also proofread my works before I issue
The way you communicate with others is essential to your success and an important component of self-image. “Simply possessing high writing confidence then increases the writer’s chances of performing well because the writer is ready, willing, and able to do the necessary work” (Mascle, D. D., 2013).When composing a message, you must write with care, being precise with clear detail. Assessing my skills, I believe that I could use some additional training in my written communication skills. To improve my current communication skills for advancements in my profession, I must continue to utilize all of my communication skills, and practice by communicating with as many other people as possible, doing my best to eliminate all possible disrupting barriers, and maximizing all communication
I take pride in being able to build relationships easily in both my personal and professional life. Listening and communicating comes easy to me and I am welcoming to others. I attribute my ability to connect with people to being able to show empathy. Empathy shows in many forms; having the ability to understand how others feel, listening to and acknowledging the person, and seeing the perspective, values and beliefs of others. (Lynn, A., 2005). Recently, a new employee joined my team at work from a different department. She had a general understanding of the operations of our department, but not yet an extensive knowledge of the ins and outs. She was given a report to take over with little explanation. I could see her getting frustrated and upset, so I took the time to introduce myself and get to know her before eventually finding out what was wrong. She explained that she wanted to perform well in her new role and was hesitant to ask for help with the report for fear of appearing incompetent. I understood how she felt and shared my feelings with her. I also took the time to teach her what she needed to know about the report. We would review it together each day until she was comfortable enough to do it on her own. She was thankful and I was happy to help as well as build a new relationship.
For the next two questions, I asked Darryl and Dallas to reflect on the others manliness and then their personal development in relation to each other. I began the second interview question asking if the guys could “constitute a time when your son/dad did something you viewed as manly”. Both father and son answered this question by using examples of “manly activities” that they witnessed the other completing, expressing how it made the other seem more responsible or strong. Darryl said he is watching Dallas become more of a man as he now takes out the trash or does other household duties with initiative or without being prodded. Dallas reflected on watching his dad mow grass in the summer, shovel snow in the winter, and exercise in his spare time. He explained how watching Darryl engage in these activities constituted them as manly in his mind because his dad was “using his body and growing stronger which is what men do” (Dallas Todd, personal communication, 2017 October 10). I followed up by asking Darryl and Dallas how the other has played a role in their personal development in becoming a better man. Contrarily, they did not refer to activities when answering this question, instead they focused on emotional strength. Darryl spoke about how Dallas has built is level of patience and how he still has high expectations of people, but his son has helped him communicate in a way that is more forgiving when those expectations are not met. When I asked Dallas the same question,
As a first-year student at Trine, I have chosen to take a course called Interpersonal Communications. Interpersonal communication is defined as a transactional process involving participants who occupy different but overlapping environments and create meaning and relationships through the exchange of messages, many of which are affected by external, physiological and psychological noise. As a living species, I have learned to communicate with others. I will say that I have always looked at myself as being a good communicator. After reading the first couple chapters in the book, and completing the assignment “Communication Skills Inventory” I have realized that I could become a better communicator in different
Week four’s assignment required the class to take How Good Are Your Communication Skills assessment that was provided by MindTools.com. The assignment included a quiz that shows how well we communicate as a leader. I scored an 84, which implies I perceive myself to be an adequate listener in the classroom. Learning more about listening and listening skills could improve me overall listening effectiveness. Using these results I will analyze what I do well, what I can do to improve, what I can change in my behavior to become a better listener, and what results I expect from the changes. I will also discuss how people communicate and provide examples of verbal and nonverbal communication. Lastly, I will
