Humans throughout the ages have used maps to help them travel. As we enter the modern age, maps on the internet and global positioning system(GPS) have become a more efficient way to travel because it allows users to get a step by step instruction on how to get to their destination. In 2004, Google debuted Google Maps, a service that that disrupt the GPS device industry and has paved the way for future navigation and GPS related apps. The success of Google Maps was primarily based on the advances of technology, economic events, its versatility, and how it is practically free to use.
Google started out as a search engine company that made money from selling ads. Cellular devices have been popular since the 1900s but as technology advances smartphones took the market in 2008. Google took that golden opportunity and make a mobile operating system. At the same time Apple was in the same race and competing to seize the smartphone market. Bragging about design and retail marketing, Apple established their name in the mobile market. Google was locked in battle with one of the world’s largest companies. However, although Apple had an advantage over design and retail marketing, Google had a completive advantage in information. In 2008 Google released Google Maps for mobile and it featured a GPS navigation. This was a critical step for Google because it was estimated that map apps were used the most right after communication. Currently Google maps is said to be used by 69% of all
