Reliable software and unreliable software is very important when it comes to computer systems. They both deals with the operation of the computer systems for a specified time. Without software, computers would just be hardware that has no specified purpose. There would never be any output or function for the computer systems because the software is what actually gives the system life. Software is not just used for the “everyday” computer that we sit down in from of in every day. It is used for multiple things such as pacemakers, airplanes, medical devices, and cellular devices.

You can imagine end users relying on the extended enterprise of those with the information, as a network of computers connected to the enterprise through a router or switch. All of the networked computers are going to have needs. Sometimes it requires a lot of processing power and sometimes it requires a little. Sometimes all of the networked computers will need something at once. To make the system work it is not enough to just build a system or infrastructure capable of the common tasks. There needs to be a supercomputer or nests of computers with the resources to tap into when needed. It has to be flexible to provide a lot of power to a few tasks, or some power to many tasks. The challenge is to build this infrastructure in the most efficient way possible.

Extra security and stability is needed. Resetting a mainframe should not happen as often as a personal computer. This is because a mainframe will affect hundreds to thousands of users.

In 1978, Intel came out with the 8086 chip. In the late 1980s, Intel came out with the 386. The 386 was a huge step forward, as it had 275,000 transistors, came in a 33 MHz version, worked with 4 GB of RAM, and could support a virtual memory of 64 TB (PCMech, 2001, para. 9). In 2002, hyper-threading came out in the Pentium 4 HT, which meant that the CPU could be fooled into thinking it had two CPUs for each one that it actually had. Using hyper-threading along with additional cores has enhanced performance and speed because some cores are utilized for programs while others perform background jobs (Hoffman, 2014, paras. 6,7). Another way CPUs have been able to increase speed is by raising the number of cores per CPU socket, and utilizing an I/O Hub “called QuickPath Interconnect” (Santana, 2014, p. 565). The use of multiprocessing has been the key for the development of today’s CPUs.
