As the writer, personally I think that arranged marriages are against my personal culture and ethnic moral standards. Growing up in a society where young individuals like myself are constantly exploring our minds and bodies, arranged marriages are out of the equation. We want to meet and find people that fit our niche and personality, and hopefully find a significant other to spend the rest of our lives with. The topic of arranged marriage is not in our dictionary, such an approach in dictating our dating lives is out of the question. With social media outlets and numerous social reforms such as gay marriage being recently legalized, it has allowed this millennial age to become more liberate and free in the way we feel and want to express our thoughts. In our society, we wouldn’t consider arranged marriages as a normal thing we are, use to consensual heterosexual serial monogamy. But in some countries, they do consider arranged marriages normal. In India, arranged marriages have been apart of the Indian culture since the fourth century and many consider it a central fabric of Indian society (Arranged Marriages, Matchmakers, and Dowries in India, 2000). Pakistan also considers arranged marriages as normal in Pakistani culture elders of the family are considered wise and they are the ones who help pick out a spouse a family member (Arranged Marriages are the Part of Pakistani Culture, 2012). Japan still practices arranged marriage but now less than ten percent of marriages are arranged compared to half a century ago when about seventy percent were arranged(Tying the Knot, 1998). In China, they have marriage markets where parents line the pathways share with other parents their clippings they have on their child, hoping to find a good match for their child (Epatko, 2015). Still, today many countries consider arranged marriages normal.

However, it has been custom in parts of India for centuries. Arranged marriages are the process of a third party, usually family, selecting a suitable partner to partake in marriage. Naturally uncommon and “bizarre” to anyone from a western society. Nevertheless when looking at empirical studies it does sway my western bias. One study compared American and Indian arranged marriages. The conclusions were at first American couples were a lot happier. In this case the concept of free will is the issue. To accept this practice does not sway judgments upon right and wrong to a point. However the fact that the marriage is “arranged” not chosen questions the concept of free will. Since the beginning of time, marriage has been a big part of every culture in the world. Specifically, marriage in which the groom’s and bride’s family choose their partner for them has been the most popular and relevant. That is until, the 18th century. Although, arranged marriage has been so dominant and convenient for starting a family, the process is outdated and against women’s natural rights. This organized marriage system is still very present in today’s world and is especially prevalent in India.
