The Monk and The Riddle by Randy Komisar is book about the art of making a life while making a living. The book begins with a riddle given to Randy, a businessman who helps develop companies into successful firms, by a monk. The riddle goes, “Imagine I have an egg and I want to drop this egg three feet without breaking it. How do I do that?”(Komisar. Prologue) The story continues on to Randy meeting with Lenny, a young businessman presenting an idea to Randy in the hopes of receiving funding. In doing so, on days when work is overwhelming for me, I will still have motivation to work because I will be working for a greater purpose as opposed to just a paycheck. In addition, I will also have more interest in the success of the business for which I am working because I will be passionate about its goal and objectives. These are useful lessons which I can apply to my post-graduation employment search.
I would recommend this book to others who are also in the process of determining which career path they would like to take or life path in general. This book helps with organizing ones thoughts on how and why to go about being financially successful while positively influencing society. As mentioned in the book, many people aim to make a lot of money then go on to retire and finally do what they enjoy. I believe that it is important to discover early on that it is possible to, “create a life while making a living.” Contrary to popular practice, work can also be a joy. In addition to have valuable lessons, the book is also an easy read. Any the many concepts discussed, such as the deferred life plan, and the difference between passion and drive, are thoroughly explained. The author uses relatable examples to make sure that lesson of the book is easily grasped and retained. The Monk and The Riddle is a good read with
The concepts throughout this book are simple but they test self-control and patience, which in our world is uncommon because of the “want it now” attitude. Ramsey talks about how “personal finance is 80 percent behavior and only 20 percent head knowledge” (ix). This main idea is something Ramsey talks about and references throughout the whole book. Another main idea or as Ramsey calls it a “motto” that’s on each page at the bottom is “If you live like no one else, later you can live like no one else” (5). This is the theme that he refers back to on
The minimalistic and modern painting by Caspar David Friedrich called The Monk By The Sea is a luring piece of art from over 200 years ago. ‘Modern’ and ‘200 years ago’ do not generally go together well, but what Friedrich achieved in this painting still invites the lovers of simplicity to see a deeper meaning in the current times. Friedrich’s uses simplicity to show a complex meaning in the painting The Monk By The Sea. Influenced by the relationship with God, nature, and Friedrich’s own personal life, he expresses this complex meaning through the composition of color, lines, and technique.
“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a
“Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.” – famous comedian and writer, David Frost. The claim “It’s Not about You” written by David Brooks states that modern society has a prodigious advantage compared to previous generations when it comes to finding jobs and different styles of living after graduating from college. Of course Not only that, but young people today are exposed to several amounts of teachings and disciplines that are furnished by the elderly, in order to avoid the mistakes they made and fix the economic crisis they provoked. To finish off the argument, Frost gives the reader insight on why some people are more successful in life than others, by telling us that the path of success isn’t finding yourself and then following your dream, success is about finding what you want to do and then accomplishing what you want to do as an aid for society.

As I started to read the required material for the first week in the book. It stated that if you are looking to make a lot of money human services is not the career of choice. Motivation is the number one driving force behind anything and everything an individual does each day. “Motivation is the desire to do the best possible job or to exert the maximum effort to perform an assigned task. Motivation energizes, directs, and sustains human behavior directed towards a goal.” (Honor, 2009). Motivation can determine the outcome of projects, goals, and can set limits on what an individual can obtain or what they believe they can obtain. Motivation often is the deciding factor on how successful a project in an organization is, and an individual’s needs and desires can both influence a person’s motivation greatly. Motivation can also determine how well an individual does in school, college, or university.
Matthew Lewis’s The Monk, published in 1796, depicts the Catholic Church in Madrid as the victim of religious perversion caused by the pride and lust of its leaders. The events of the novel, including the monk Ambrosio’s surrender to temptation, leading to the rape and murder of innocent Antonia, as well as Agnes’s imprisonment by the vain Prioress of St. Clare’s Convent, serve to emphasize the lack of true religious devotion in the city of Madrid. However, despite the shocking events of the novel, the city had already fallen prey to temptation, and had ultimately strayed from the path of the Church long before these new atrocities took place.

Just right after graduate, some students might have hard time to find a professional position as an engineer. During the interview, this engineer suggests that from the different perspectives, the students should get employed first, then, think about their career. In “Your First Job Doesn’t (Really) Matter,” Jodi Glickman, a contributor to the Harvard Business Review, describes the pre-job training and knowledge that people learn should not be all for their professional learning. Indeed, she says what she did do is “learn a whole lot about myself, about relating to others, about adjusting expectations and managing difficult workplace environments” (Glickman). Same as what Glickman describes, Mr. King did not suggest that student should immediately get into their professional working when they get their first job or do not be too concerned about whether their first job is related to their major. For them, the most
I have not been completely certain of how I wanted my life to be but now, at 33, I do not what I want out of life and what type of career I want to have. I 'm slowly building in more time in my day to focus on developing myself in order to reach my desired goals. Creating a plan that begins with the end in mind is definitely something I 'm starting immediately since reading this book.
“Successful, ambitious people need both energy and goals to succeed. Someone with plenty of energy but no goals may find themselves pursuing one opportunity after another without success, wondering what it is that they are wanting out of life. Someone with goals but no energy may find themselves wanting to achieve success, but too complacent to do the work to go about pursuing their goals” (businessdictionary.com). This quote says that even though ambition gives you the motivation to achieve your goals. People may quit when the work becomes too hard, but striving to reach a certain goal will come with stress and failure. We must use those failures to learn from the mistakes we make and use it as a motivation to achieve. If you learn to set desirable goals for yourself, and approach them with an optimistic attitude, you are well on your way to the success you desire.
Motivation at work stimulates the interest of a person in an activity. Motivation at works is very complex because there are multiple motives operating at the same time. Goals motivate and guide workers' behaviors. Specific goals are better than general goals and little difficulty is better than easy goals. The degree of expectancy determines how much effort is put forth, people will work hard if they expect the effort will pay off. Increased job enrichment which includes more control at work and a high number of tasks to perform leads to high motivation. Stress on the job reduces motivation and productivity. The specific needs to achieve and
