Bottega Veneta was established in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro in Vicenza. The name Bottega Veneta means “Venetian shop” in Italian. Bottega Veneta prided themselves on craftsmanship. They developed a leather weaving technique called intrecciato that remains a signature of the brand. In the beginning of the 1970s, Bottega Veneta built its reputation around the irreproachable quality of their work and advertising with the tag line “When your own initials are enough" - the discretion of their designs. The motto “When your own initials are enough” conveys a concept of individuality and confidence that now applies to women and men’s leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes, jewellery, furniture and more. He started with the removal of all visible logos from the brand’s products, made the signature intrecciato weave a prominent feature on all leather goods and took the brand’s focus solely back to artisanal production. Tomas Maier is the creative talent behind the renaissance of Bottega Veneta. With its re-found fame, the fashion house released a women's ready-to-wear line in 2005, and a men's line in 2006 in parallel with their international expansion plan which had begun in 2002. In April 2006, Bottega Veneta launched its first jewelry line, and branched out into interiors and furniture design. In summer 2006, recognizing the importance of craftsmanship and the fragility of this traditional way of life, Bottega Veneta opened a school to train and support future generations of leather craftsmen.
