The Pros And Cons Of Algebra II

In recent discussions of Algebra II, one controversial issue has been whether or not it should be a graduation requirement. Some argue that it prepares students for college and provides critical thinking skills. On the other hand, some contend that college readiness can source from any other core class offered in school. My own view is that although high school math classes can provide students with needed analytical skills, Algebra II should not be a requirement. It takes up room in a student’s schedule who would highly benefit from taking another class. This math class should still be offered for those who have an interest in the mathematics field, but should not be a deciding factor in whether a student graduates, or is accepted into the college of their choice. I had a teacher that did not accept my correct answer on a test, simply because I found it in way that she did not teach the class. This kind of behavior amongst teachers completely discourages students. Rifkin, a prominent instructor in the Russian School of Mathematics says, “I’d say to my children, ‘Forget the rules! Just think!’ And they’d say, ‘That’s not how they teach it here. That’s not what the teacher wants us to do,” (2016). If school districts think that Algebra creates individual critical thinking, then why do they allow their teachers to tell students that there is only one right way to answer a question? If a student can find an easier and more effective solution, let them.
In conclusion, Algebra II should not be a graduation requirement. It is not the only class that can provide students with critical thinking skills and certainly does not make them better than any of their peers. My belief may make me stand out as a pariah amongst my classmates, (who assume that Algebra should be required just because they are good at it,) but Algebra II is not necessary to propel students towards a better
