The Role Of Fighting In The Civil War

A Civil War is a battle between the same citizens in a country. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the independence for the Confederacy or the survival of the Union. By the time Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1861, in the mist of 34 states, the constant disagreement caused seven Southern slave states to their independence from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, generally known as the South, grew to include eleven states. The states that remained devoted to the US were known as the Union or the North. The number one question that is never completely understood about the Civil War is what caused the war. There were multiple events that led to the groundbreaking, bloody, and political war.

Abraham Lincoln once stated “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln is a hero for the citizens of America because his determination and courage to ending slavery even if it meant war caused peace in this nation. Slavery was the vital cause of the American Civil War. The north and the south both had their differences on how to run the country. People in the North believed in unity and that slavery should not exist because “all men are created equally.” On the other hand, the South believed in continuing slavery. People tried to talk it out and come to a middle ground after both sides compromising, however that didn’t work and caused war. Ideological differences were a vital role to making the American Civil War an inevitable event.

The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians. The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined.

The Civil War that occurred was one of the darkest times in our history as a country. It was a time where there was a complete breakdown of social and political systems. Hundreds of thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands more were aversely affected. However, it was also a time of remembrance and significant moral progress. It is remembered as the turning point in American History and would be the foundation for the Civil Rights movement many years later.

The United States could not have become half-slave and half-free and not fought the civil war (Sultan Knish). Lincoln stated that a house could not stand if it is divided against itself and government cannot undergo half-slave and half-free (Sultan Knish). Although I have no expectation of the house falling and the union being dissolved, but I do expect it to end (Sultan Knish). Lincoln believed that some northern politicians were plotting to help an aggressive slavocracy and that his nemesis, Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, stood at the forefront of the effort (Lincoln). Even some Republicans began to back down from their stance against the extension of slavery and move toward Douglas’s philosophy of popular sovereignty, a doctrine that could allow the continued growth of the American “cancer (Lincoln)”. A crisis was at hand. As a man of principle, Lincoln saw no middle ground on the slavery issue (Lincoln). The conflict represented, as he would soon say, “the eternal struggle between right and wrong throughout the world (Lincoln).” As a practical politician, he knew Douglas had to be stopped (Lincoln). Finally, in the winter of 1857–1858, Lincoln sat down and wrote what had been brewing in him for years (Lincoln). Lincoln was making careful notes for a firm public statement, as was his habit (Lincoln). These notes saved by an accident of history and never intended for publication, represent a turning point in Lincoln thought that would have been lost otherwise

Throughout the Civil War, there were many different types of warfare. Amongst the common Union and Confederate soldiers, many men fought on either side in different types of irregular military forces. These forces, along with regular soldiers, contributed to the many styles of warfare. Three prominent warfare styles during the Civil War were regularly trained soldiers, bushwhackers, and guerrilla soldiers. The majority of battles were fought by official Union or Confederate soldiers. These battles typically had some sort of organization and were not extremely violent. The conduct of warfare during the American Civil War best exemplified one characteristic of the Western way of war, which without its incorporation could have drastically changed the outcome of the war and the existence of the United States as we know it. This characteristic demonstrated is innovation. Innovation as a characteristic of the Western way of war best exemplifies the American Civil War based on the telegraph, the rifled musket and the railroad. Had the Union and United States government not leveraged the above mentioned technologies the outcome of the war could have resulted in the division of this country.

In the civil war army regulations where called for the camp to be laid out in a fixed pattern. Understanding the Civil War is very important, to understand the way America has been shaped through out the past couple of centuries. Shelby Foote, a historian, believed that the Civil War defines the people in America. The Civil War was a war involving the North (The Union) and the South (The Confederates) who had different points of view over whether or not slavery was justified. Ultimately around 600,000 Americans lost their lives during the Civil War. Almost everybody in America was influenced and affected by the Civil War, from soldiers to women, from free Africans to slaves, the Civil War shaped America forever. The Civil War lasted for only four years, from 1861-1865, but it led to many economic, political, and social developments that remained for far longer than the fighting. From 1860-1877, for example, many impactful events happened leading to the start and end of the war and into the rebuilding that was necessary after the fighting left behind devastation. In 1861, Fort Sumter was fired upon, and the north was angered into action causing Lincoln to call for soldiers to come and fight the south. Along with his call for soldiers, he became commander in chief and carried out his role as president through a military standpoint, thereby strengthening his position and the whole government. Because the Missouri Compromise was deemed unconstitutional, there was a famous court case where a black salve, Dred Scott, sued for his freedom claiming Missouri citizenship when he was moved to New York.
