Psychology is defined by Merriam-Webster, as the science of mind and behavior. It is a study of how an individual's psyche can be created, developed, altered or destroyed. Carol Gilligan, a Harvard Graduate School professor, for many years has analyzed the psychological theory and development, specifically in a book entitled In A Different Voice.

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior. In order to understand psychology as it today, we have to know something about its history. Additionally, we are going to see that the field of psychology is conceivable to adopt several different approaches, including the biological, behaviorist, cognitive, psychodynamic, and humanistic perspectives.

This essay examines the advantages and disadvantages of using a method primarily for gathering research on human subjects that can be examined for later use. It will give a basic outline of the methods of investigation, their uses and their suitability. I will also look at the scientific method as a whole and examine the criticisms of this method using the writings of Hume and Popper.

The Freudian slip is any action that can expose an unconscious thought aloud. These happen daily because we live fast-paced lives that we do not always stop and think what we say and do; we are constantly thinking a million things per minute that we confuse what we think versus what we say. Psychology is trying to answer the questions of why people act the way that they do, and what causes them to act that way. Philosophy was a debate about the nature of thought, behavior, and how this linked to the mind and the body. René Descartes argued that philosophers focus their attention on the mind because he believed that the mind and body are sperate.

The word "psychology" is the combination of two terms - study (ology) and soul (psyche), or mind. The derivation of the word from Latin gives it this clear and obvious meaning:

The word psychology derives from the Greek psyche (mind, soul spirit) and logos (discourse, study). It suggests that psychology is simply 'study of the mind'. However, it is worth to mentioning that definition of psychology has been changed in order to dominant perspective.

Psychology is defined by content. It is the scientific study of behavior and experience. Psychology uses scientific methodologies which include different techniques and strategies in order to collect and analyze data (Gorbel, Sept. 2nd). Psychologists conduct research in order to measure and describe behavior as a way to understand when,why, or how events occur. They apply their knowledge to the real-world (Gorbel, Sep. 28th).

Psychology, defined as the scientific study of the mind, is a very broad field with many career opportunities. Psychology is a fairly new field and has many job opportunities available for anyone wanting to make a career with a degree. There are therapy related jobs along with jobs that are not therapy related. Most psychologists wanting a job that is therapy related need a master’s degree or doctoral, however ones who do not pursue a job with therapy obtain a bachelor’s or master’s. The average pay for psychologists ranges from around $70,000 to $100,000 annually. The amount of pay results from the location and the education one has acquired. Psychologists also have a range of tasks depending on the type of psychology one pursues. Throughout this research, a few careers in psychology will be explored and information will be provided about each of these careers.

To answer this question I feel it is important to understand the definitions of psychology and science. I will start with definitions of the terms psychology and science and will briefly review the methods of psychology. I will outline the behaviourist approach, the psychoanalytical approach, the cognitive approach, the humanistic approach and the biological approach. In order to confirm whether psychology can fulfil the definition of science I will outline the five approaches and use evidence from the approaches to support my findings.

Since first starting this course, I’ve learned a number of material I think will help me better understand myself, people around me, and my community. Examples of what I have learned are, thinking critically with psychological sciences, the biology of behavior, consciousness and two-track mind, autonomic nervous system, and developing through a life span.
