Trait leadership is exactly what it says. It is leadership based on the traits a person holds. However, the Trait Approach of looking at leadership also points out that people can emerge as a leader. Of the five main traits, I see integrity as the most important and self-confidence as the hardest to acquire. In class, we looked at the five major traits of leaders; of intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. Intelligence is important for leaders to be able to communicate effectively with their followers. Without the knowledge of being able to communicate with followers, there would not be any followers doing the “following.” It would be chaos. In a business, if the leader in a group is in charge of a project, but is unable to communicate with their team, the project will not be completed as well as planned. Leaders need self-confidence for many reasons, the most important being to show followers to have confidence in their leader. If leaders don’t believe in themselves, why would a follower believe in them? The third trait discussed was determination. This trait would also reflect my last idea on self-confidence. Why would followers be determined to work and push through if the leader isn’t? Sociability plays hand in hand with being outgoing, in my eyes. After giving the question some thought she responded by saying that a leader must be able to remain objective and prioritize. “Prioritizing in my job is essential,” Rene stated, “with so many issues to deal with some nights it can be difficult to determine which to tackle first. However, remaining calm and objective in your decision making can help a leader prioritize properly, which can improve patient outcomes.” Additionally, Rene emphasized that the best leaders lead by example. By displaying desired attitudes and behaviors, a nursing leader may inspire their staff to act in a similar manner. Another area Rene stressed when posed this question was a leader’s ability to support learning. She went on to state that “it is necessary to focus on learning, not chastising. Placing the blame on someone rather than stepping back and looking at the details of a problem, deters the team from achieving the overall goal. Incident reports remain vital to the process of learning.” Rene continued to emphasis that by filling out incident reports individuals can analyze a situation or process and determine where the flaws or errors remain present. In this world, there are many types of people and personalities. The personality trait in question is a leadership. From group leaders to CEOs to presidents, leaders are around us. However, what makes one a leader? Well, a leader needs to possess the characteristics of cooperation, problem solving, integrity, confident, and the list goes on. A leader also needs to live up to any mistakes and learn from them instead of pushing it off or blaming someone else. A leader needs to not take bias, but instead be fair and look at the big picture.
