What constitutes an effective leader? Perhaps the most notable is that through actions and thoughts an effective leader can inspire us. The concepts surrounding leadership remain debatable, since old theories are still considered and new ones continue to emerge. Regardless, leadership can be influenced by several factors relating to three main features based on traits, behavior and situation.
Skills are a basic requirement, but traits are essential in leadership. Traits are unique in defining an individual’s character. A combination of strong skills and traits that include emotional intelligence and knowledge of leadership behaviors become critical factors for a leader to lead effectively. It is important for a leader to possess “effective

Mattel, a leader in the toy and game industry, saw the need to make some changes in its organizational culture, strategy, and in leadership development. The company has been recognized for its efforts by establishing development programs to identify and retain talent. A part of continued development requires management “…to identify potential leaders and develop succession plans for key positions” (Mathis 315). As a result, employee retention has strengthened, and the company is in a better position to operate in an intense competitive environment.
The effective leader will incorporate positive traits and behaviors that are critical when responding to a situation. It is important to address the issue or concern and try to find the best possible solution, instead of sweeping it under the rug for later disposal. I believe compromise with consideration to the other person’s feelings, thoughts, or opinions are crucial to reaching a final solution in any given situation.
Effective leaders should possess a variety of positive traits that include emotional intelligence, knowledge of leadership behaviors, and the ability to demonstrate an appropriate level of direction in varying situations or environments. A leader should demonstrate behaviors of inspirational motivation through vision, idealized influence in behavior, individualized consideration by being supportive, and intellectual stimulation with encouragement (Kreitner 465). Furthermore, they influence and transform
Over the past couple of months, we discussed several traits, skills, and behaviors that have contributed to the success of both past and present leaders. Intelligence, integrity, charisma, and confidence are some of the traits that characterize many of these leaders. Interpersonal skills, oratory skills, and conceptual skills are some of the more important skills that helped to shape their leadership style. Some of these skills go hand in hand with the traits that are essential for strong leadership. Meanwhile, the behaviors that drive these leaders include inspiring and motivating others, collaboration, having a strategic perspective and trust. Combined, these traits, skills and behaviors make for effective leadership.
This approach emphasize that having a leader with a certain set of traits is crucial to having effective leadership. It’s the leader and the leader’s personality that are central to the leadership process.
To be a leader, one must have certain traits that contribute, in a good way, to their leadership. An example could be persistence. What is a leader without persistence, what would be the point of them doing anything at all? Bravery is another valuable trait to have. In order to be a leader, you must be brave enough to stand for what you believe in and what you want to change, even when the outcome may seem bleak. One more essential trait: motivation. A leader simply cannot be a leader if no one is motivated to follow them. An example of a leader who exhibits all three of these characteristics in a great way would be Martin Luther King Jr. He was an African-American man who lived in a segregated time and place. Quickly, King became a leader
Characteristics of a Successful Leader An effective leader has certain/basic yet important characteristic. The character of a leader is important in order to show how effective they are. A good leader sets the bar high and believes in excellence, motivation, and to be dedicated. In order to lead a good leader must have these qualities/ characteristics.
There are numerous characteristics of leadership, some of which include: confidence, initiative, good communication, responsibility, compassion, and being open to change; each of theses traits contribute to the quality of a leader and are important factors because without them inadequate decisions can be made (Satterwhite). Many feel that most “are born
A good leader understands himself or herself. He or she must have a clear goal that others are able to see and understand. A good leader must be reliable and motivated so that he or she can lead others. A good attitude is also very important for effective leadership. A leader with a good attitude can make a difference in their workplace, among colleagues and improve the environment.
In this world, there are many types of people and personalities. The personality trait in question is a leadership. From group leaders to CEOs to presidents, leaders are around us. However, what makes one a leader? Well, a leader needs to possess the characteristics of cooperation, problem solving, integrity, confident, and the list goes on. A leader also needs to live up to any mistakes and learn from them instead of pushing it off or blaming someone else. A leader needs to not take bias, but instead be fair and look at the big picture. I have many of these traits in leadership.
A leader must be able to move quickly from one agenda to another. A leader must be able to inspire a person or a group of people to want to do their best. A definition of leadership can be, “A relationship through which one person influences the behavior of other people” ( Mullins, p. 904 ). One of the biggest problems that a leader in any organization has to deal with is change. Leaders have to be versatile and willing to make tough decisions in today’s economic climate. We will analyze what it takes to be a successful leader and how to manage the people around you for the best results. Asking questions
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.
The most important characteristics an effective leader must have are: motivation, selflessness, and have an exemplary character. Many people might say these characteristics are not essential for a leader, but in order to be successful, a leader must think and care about others first rather than themselves. A leader must be passionate and motivated to help the people achieve their goals. A leader must want to lead the people at all times no matter what the circumstances are. A leader must have the ability to persuade others and give them hope whenever times get rough.
There are many different characteristics a person needs to possess in order to be an effective leader and to be an asset to a company. Besides having a high IQ a leader must be able to evaluate a business environment, manage tasks efficiently, promote strategic thinking and innovation, and manage change. All the traits just mentioned are extremely important, although, recent studies have showed one of the more important characteristics a leader must possess in order to be effective is emotional intelligence.
While reading about the Consciousness of Self portion of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership: A Guide for Students, I learned not only about myself, but more about the necessary traits to becoming an effective leader. I learned that to become a strong leader, you must first introspect on yourself and recognize your strengths and weaknesses. It is also important to be able to incorporate these assets and drawbacks into your daily life, any group organizations, and especially in any leadership positions. Detailed down below are the three main concepts that stand out the most for me in leadership.
A trait that almost every good leader has is the ability to motivate. They want everyone to achieve beyond expectations. The leader will be motivated, not by money, but by passion for what they doing, and to do a great job. A leader is also motivated to make sure everyone does a good job and participates. These leaders are optimistic, which motivates others to think more positively. They have social skills, trust and focus on results. It includes providing awareness that balance the merit of the individual with the needs and stability of the group (Goleman, 2004).
Leaders are made up by traits, skills behavior and effectiveness, which are determined by distinguishing personal characteristics of a leader, such as intelligence, honesty, self-confidence, and appearance. However, the value of a particular trait or set or traits, skill behavior and effectiveness vary with the organization’s situation (Draft, 2015). For example, our executive leaders of Humana have their own unique style.
The purpose of this research is to establish the necessary components of effective leadership. The findings from this research will contribute to the overall study of leadership and provide relevant information to those who are looking to become better leaders. Leadership is a very large topic to cover, but the findings for this project argue that there are fourteen necessary components that all leaders must have in order to successfully lead others. Tier one components include: engage, humility, integrity, empowering, develop, adapt, sustain, and learn. These are structural components leaders must possess in order to efficiently lead others. The tier two components include conflict management tactics such as accommodation,
