Their competitiveness to be better than each other in both economic and social caused the two regions to became enemies. It seemed as though there was a long concrete wall that distanced the two further apart. Compromise measures advertised by the congress after intense debates in 1820 and 1850 maintained a balance between slave, Free states and helped preserve peace in the nation (Martin). But with many in the South advocating the spread of slavery into new territories and with the north's abolition movement, issues that were kept within began to emerge. As numbers of people who were against slavery began to increase, this caused the South's economy to drop dramatically. Offenses against slavery like campaigning and the book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” fired up the South to defend themselves and to prevent slavery from being abolished. Most of the conflicts between the states were viewed as small issues, but neither did people realize that economy was something that led to one of America’s bloodiest war. The Civil war had many root causes, but the economic differences between the South and North was the primary reason.

The Civil War was the war that divided the young American nation into two opposing sides. One side being the North, also called the Union, and the second side being the South, also called the Confederacy.
