Tourism Industry in Indonesia and Vietnam (Case Study of Bali and Da Nang)
1. Introduction
Over the past few decades, tourism has become one of the most important revenue sources for countries worldwide, helping to grow and develop their economies (Chou, 2013). Tourism also attracts a lot of foreign investors to come and invest in these countries’ tourism industries. In this study, Bali and Da Nang will be used to support this study since both of those regions has become the important tourism area in Indonesia and Vietnam.
1.1 Background and History
1.1.1 Tourism in Bali
Located in the southwest part of Indonesia, between Java and Lombok Island, Bali has become Indonesia’s favorite tourist destination (World Atlas, 2016). Bali’s beautiful beaches, exotic cultures, and gorgeous nightlife are the points that make tourists love to come to Bali. Since the number of tourist arrivals in Bali increases every year, it makes Bali become one of the most important sources of revenue for Indonesia’s national income.
1.1.2 Tourism in Da Nang
Located in the middle of Vietnam, Da Nang is known as the third largest city in Vietnam (Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism, 2012). Even though Da Nang is not the most favored tourist destination compared to Bali, Da Nang has recently become the fastest city that grows in Vietnam’s tourism. Da Nang’s beaches, nightlife, and its famous street foods became the points that the tourists looking for. Thus, it makes Da Nang slowly has a big
Tourism has taken a toll on many Native Hawaiians and is a huge human rights issue today. Most Hawaiians dislike tourism greatly due to the selfishness and greediness tourists bring to their home country. The pastor at a small rural church on the island of Kauai, Reverend Kaleo Patterson, has witnessed and dealt with numerous Hawaiians who struggle with the issues of tourism. Numerous vacation resorts that attract tourists have taken over gravesites of Hawaiians that have passed away. Due to this problem ancient Hawaiians have to partake in reburials. Tourism causes destruction to coral reefs and rivers because of mindless pollution. Reverend Patterson has protested and given public hearings in effort to acknowledge her fury on tourism. Tourism has brought an uncontrollable worldwide business that has no sympathy or thoughtfulness for the original people of Hawaii.
Almost all tourists who vacation in Bali, would visit the beach tourism, especially a white sand beach with views of the sunset. The island has many beaches of white sand and black sand beaches, and each beach has its own beauty and uniqueness. The location of the beach in Bali spread in all corners of the island of Bali.
Tourism has several impacts on many different aspects of Bali’s society. Tourism has impacted on the already existing, social, economic, cultural and environmental processes of the island. For example, as a result of tourism the pace of urbanisation has rapid increased and tourism has sped up the process of economic development.
It is obvious that the beach has become a preferred among foreigners. In fact, tourism rate in Riviera Nayarit has grown in big number. And as the tourist trade increases, more and more stores are opened, like coffee shops, yoga centers, computer shops, and golf courses, to give travelers access to the stores they have back home. What’s remarkable is that Riviera Nayarit has also tapped Hollywood, as some Hollywood stars were seen in particular Riviera Nayarit towns, like the ritzy Punta Mita.
Tourism plays a vital role in economic development in most countries around the world. The industry has not only direct economic impact, but also significant indirect and influential impacts. There is agreement among experts that the travel and tourism sector is the fastest growing of global economy. According to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourism receipts surpass US$ 1 trillion in 2011, growing about 3.8%up from 2010 (WTO, 2012).
Another aspect of impact of tourism on a country’s economy is that it facilitates the expansion of the market of goods and services. Foreigners come to a country willing to spend money on different goods and services, thus increasing the amounts of sales. This is a great chance for producers and service providers to receive larger profits. This concerns not only hoteliers, tour operators, and souvenir shops owners. Public transportation, retail stores of different kind, restaurants, and cafes benefit from international tourism. Obviously, if these industries are in demand, businesses will be expanding. On the one hand, it means that more money is paid to the budget. On the other hand, profits generated by the owners are spent inside the country, affecting almost all the fields of the
1).The relationship between Hospitality and Tourism: Tourism and hospitality go hand in hand, the hospitality industry offer services like accommodation, transportation, food and beverage, recreation and leisure. Tourism is the activity by the tourists where they engage in travelling to destinations where they want to experience recreational and leisure activities and most of the time avails of accommodation, food and beverage. The hospitality industry is the supplier of the services for tourism. The meaning of hospitality is providing a safe and enjoyable environment for patrons. It also means responsibly serving liquor, to ensure that patrons do not become unduly intoxicated and subsequently a problem for management, staff and the
Tourism expenditure is a very significant factor in the economic growth of every country. In other words, the more the tourists spend the better it is for the economy. Thailand is also known for having a very high demand in tourism, as it is cheap and very convenient to many travelers. However this sometimes causes negligence and over-utilization of tourism resources and this can have a negative impact on Thailand’s economy (Naewmalee, 2005). For example if a tourist travels to Thailand and his/her expenditure is fixed with every following visit then this does not generate the revenue that is expected because their expenditure is not increasing (Naewmalee, 2005). “Recently, the tourists’ daily expenditure in Thailand, which is a direct measurement of revenue per tourist, shows a declining trend due to the falling of relative price” (Pongsirirushakun, 2003).
Da Nang’s past has had many dark moments and economic struggles throughout its history. In the past, Da Nang has been very underdeveloped in the ruins of the French colony (Ives, Mike). Da Nang used to be part of a French colony in Vietnam until 1956, when then they broke free and become independent (Vietnam History): “streets are still flanged by faded yellow homes from the French colonial era”(Ives, Mike). The country has always been a fishing and harbor town. The people that have lived there work hard for there money. Since then they have had a growing
The author will use the number of visitors as an indicator of how Bali Bomb affected Bali’s tourism. This indicator is chosen because it’s commonly referenced to determine the level of tourism development.
The Travel and Tourism industry is still one of the largest single businesses in world commerce and its importance is widely recognized. The tourism industry is now one of the largest sectors earning foreign exchange. In the face of many benefits, many countries have started assigning due weight age to the tourism industry in their national development agenda. Tourism is an industry that operates on a massively broad scale: it embraces activities ranging from the smallest sea-side hotel; to air-lines, multi-national hotel chains and major international tour operators. Originally, non-traditional industries such as tourism emerged as a solution to strike a balance between ecology and industry
70). In 2006, there were 234,000 people employed directly in tourism jobs in Vietnam and 510,000 whose jobs indirectly depended on tourism (John, 2006). According to World Travel and Tourism Council and Oxford Economic Forecasting, Vietnam’s tourism sector is expected to experience the sixth-highest growth rate of countries in the world between 2007 and 2016 (“Vietnam’s Tourism Grows,” 2006). Aside from this quantifiable growth, tourism in Vietnam also continues to change in character. New tourism niches, new types of tourism attractions and enterprises and new kinds of tourists have been appearing in Vietnam since 1986. Doi moi is an ongoing process that is reflected in all aspects of the Vietnamese society, economy and politics.
Vietnam with a diverse and unique gastronomy and many other advantages presented above has a great potential to become a key product for Vietnam tourism.
Indonesia is a country of 34 provinces and over 300 ethnic groups. Although this particular country has diverse cultures to present, its tourism has always been focused in Bali. From the 1990s, Bali has always been the major attraction for foreign visitors in Indonesia (Statistics Indonesia). In August 2014, it was found that Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has the highest number of international arrivals compared to other provinces in Indonesia (Statistics Indonesia). Little is known about other destinations, such as Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java. Borobudur temple is one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world that was built in the ninth century during Syailendra Dynasty supremacy. This temple has six square platforms with three circular platforms on the top and it owns 504 Buddha statues inside mounds known as stupa. Borobudur was previously recognized as one of world’s seven wonders and it is also acknowledged as UNESCO World Heritage site. However, this valuable cultural heritage barely attracts foreign visitors. Statistics Indonesia revealed that international arrival in the nearest airports to Magelang was far under Bali’s visitors (9,887 arrivals in Surakarta and Jogjakarta and 336,628 arrivals in Bali). Based on this fact, the author proposes that Central Java government should focus on improving Borobudur temple tourism as the way to increase the number of international tourists to Indonesia, which
Not too long ago, the Singapore government cooperated with Indonesia to develop cruise ship tourism as Singapore is enjoying a cruise tourism boom (The Jakarta Post, 2011). This collaboration boosts economic bilateral ties and tourism. Previously, the Singapore government also backed entrepreneur Ong Beng Seng’s bid to
