In male-dominated cultures sex roles are sharply differentiated. There is a clear role distribution which suggests itself in the fact that men are superior to women and men normally occupy management positions. Hence, the focus is on achievement, competition and ‘fighting’. However, in female oriented cultures genders are less distinguished and both genders play the same role. These cultures stress care, compromise and harmony.
The fourth dimension called Uncertainty Avoidance aims at the way people try to get a grip on unpredictable and ambiguous situations. People living in a culture with strong uncertainty avoidance have fear of the unknown. Therefore elaborate rules, regulations, and clear orders exist. Cultures with a low uncertainty avoidance tolerate differences, unanticipated situations and are more open toward change. People make decisions which are subject to individual discretion and which are based on more universal rules.
Long-Term Orientation vs. Short-Term Orientation relate to the choice between future and present virtue. In other words, Hofstede’s last dimension can be seen as an indicator for a society’s attitude toward time and tradition. Values associated with Long-Term
Orientation are thrift, filial piety and perseverance. Young people should sacrifice their pleasures of their life at their young age for the sake of the benefit of their future. Values associated with Short Term Orientation are respect for tradition, fulfilling social
Values are often influenced by different ideologies, so it is important to look at these also.
According to Mrs. P, respect for elders, a good education, good family background and connections, religion, and good ethics for society, are values that are held highly within the family’s culture. Education and a highly held position in a career are very important
24. How do you view yourself in terms of Hofstede’s six dimensions (Fig. 8.8)? For each dimension, place and “X” on one of the globes to indicate your own cultural preference. Do your preferences show the influence of your cultural background? Explain. Page 233
“Men are stronger than women.” Due to the hormone differences between men and women, women have less muscle mass and more fat mass then men, so by default men are just better than women. Women and men also have different genitals, but having their genitals outside of their body men must be superior

As we grow, we are raised with many values. Parents, work with one another to
Values are standards and principals by which we live our lives. These standards are many and often depend on people`s background e.g. Culture, class, religion, gender, age. Values are extremely individual attitudes that direct people`s responses to the world around them. Amongst some of the values I live my life by and respect are privacy allowing me to have space to myself and respecting the fact that others may desire privacy, to be safe and also allowing others the same, having self respect, being trustworthy, being non judgmental, being anti discriminatory, respect life and faith, value freedom and equality, value choice and others points of view. I have learned to live my life this way from my parents and their families. The schools
“Men are thought to be physically tougher, more aggressive, more rational, better able to handle sex without love, and more likely to be successful at work by virtue of their greater will to win.” (Nicholson, 1993, 2)
in the government of the physical world it is observable that the female in point of strength is, in general, inferior to the male. This is the law of Nature; and it does not appear to be suspended or abrogated in favour of woman. A degree of physical superiority cannot, therefore, be denied, and it is a noble prerogative! (Wollstonecraft, 111).2
Promote core ethical values such as caring, honesty, fairness, responsibility and respect for self and others (Lickona, T). Children follow examples. By displaying these values to them early on in their development they will develop the characteristics with unspoken words.
I think viewing these values from the child’s point of view and applying them as a child could is interesting. Integrity can help a child remain honest and speak up when they need to. Taking responsibility for actions and situations that the child might get into will help them get out of a bad situation, hopefully with minimal damage and a lesson learned. Concern for others can go a long way especially with children. For example if a child sees a classmate or friend being treated poorly by a superior or by another child, caring for the victim will help a great amount. Often times people turn their head to situations that look bad but don’t involve them which is a bug cause of the problem, talking and getting help is the right thing to
All values that families instill in their children are important. They are the deciding factors that help a person grow. Values
These are usually a mix of family values and social-cultural values, together with our own individual ones, according to our experiences.
Uncertainty avoidance refers to the level of anxiety about the future (Hofstede 1980, 2001). Societies that are high in uncertainty avoidance continuously feel the inherent uncertainty in life as a threat that must be
As such the family and religion now have a minimal impact on the average youngster. The values emphasized today include individualism, Godlessness, materialism, secularism and rationalism.
