4. Briefly describe the elements of the formal and the informal organization. Give examples of each.

Classical organization theory evolved during the first half of this century. It represents the merger of scientific management, bureaucratic theory, and administrative theory.

Ann Wood the current director of marketing for the Consumer Products Division in Norwich Enterprises faced many challenging obstacles during this particular day; she is in charge of three different groups. The original idea of collective efficacy is derived from social-cognitive theory. According to Bandura (1995, 2000), social-cognitive theory distinguishes among three forms of human agency: personal, proxy, and collective. The stronger their belief is, the more actively they engage in collective efforts.

The study of Organizational Behavior (OB) is related to individuals, group of people working together in teams. The study becomes more challenging when situational factors interact. No two individuals are likely to behave in the same manner in a particular work situation. It is the predictability of a manager about the expected behavior of an individual. There are no absolutes in human behavior. It is the human factor that is contributory to the productivity hence the study of human behavior is important. Great importance therefore must be attached to the study.

In fact, it is quite difficult to develop an effective team. Organizational commitment is one of the two individual outcomes derived from individual mechanisms like job satisfaction, stress, motivation, trust, justice, ethics, and learning and decision making. These mechanisms and outcomes can be found on the integrative model of organizational behavior (OB). Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson defined organizational commitment in their Organizational Behavior 5th Edition book as the desire of an employee to remain a member of the organization (p 64).
