When an emergency occurs and first aid is required it is always important for a qualified first aider to carry out any first aid required there are many reasons for this, the most important is that if a non qualified person try s to give first aid they may cause more damage or injury to the individual, it is also against policies and procedures of organisations and health and safety legislations.

Own health or hygiene might pose a risk to individuals or others at work by causing infections, causing illness or causing fatalities, this can be prevented by washing hands thoroughly before preparing food and after going to the toilet, covering mouth/ turning away when coughing, applying/ replacing old plasters, disposing of used tissues, taking sick leave if ill etc.

How legislation, policies and procedures relate to health, safety and security in a health and social care setting and how legislation, policies and procedures promote safety of individuals in a health and social care setting.
This could be after changing a nappy, going to the toilet or playing outside. This risk can be minimised by making sure everyone washes their hands before eating and before, during and after preparing meals. Also, ensure that all equipment is clean and in good condition as this can also cause contamination if dealing with raw and cooked foods.
It is vital because they have to make sure they keep the public safe and by having a trained first aider on hand it helps them feel safe in the knowledge they have someone to help before an ambulance arrives.

If a social worker has had first aid training, it would contribute to providing a positive experience for users of social care services, as they would be the first port of call in an accident or emergency. The service user would not need to wait on a paramedic or an ambulance to be looked at, they would be seen as and when the accident happened. It would also make the service user feel safe in your care as they will feel better knowing that if an accident does occur, you are there and easy to call upon.

The school aims to have at least 4 members of staff who have all attended a 3 day first aid course and where possible to have all other members of staff attend a 1 day training. First aid should be carried out when necessary by a qualified first aider but it should not prevent someone helping if the situation requires. A list of first aiders is situated around the school in places such as first aid room and staff room. It states that all members of staff including supply need to know who the first aiders are.
