The flag is a trademark for the freedoms embraced by the citizens of the United States, and is a beacon of hope for those fighting to keep those freedoms. The flag is greatly respected by the citizens of the United States. There are multitudinous people who use the flag as a form of protest in ways such as ripping it, burning it, or trampling on it. These acts are forms of desecration of the flag. Desecration is the use of something considered sacred in a profane way. Every American is entitled to an opinion and has the freedom the express these opinions. The flag is a symbol of freedoms, stated and protected in the Constitution of the United States.

The American Flag is the most widespread symbol Americans have. It took a disaster to make me realize how important it is. I would always wave the flag in a parade or on the Fourth of July, but I never really stopped to think about what I was doing. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 are what changed my view. My great uncle was a Marine and my great grandfather was in the Army during WWII. They both served their country and welcomed that flag every single day. The flag means RESPECT, LIBERTY, and HONOR, to me what does the flag mean to you? The ideas brought upon when discussing flags roles in society are applicable to my life and many others, even though we might not realize this. Personally, these ideas have affected my family by way of my Dad. My father loves geography. He majored in geography with emphasis in cartography, and brought it upon himself to educated me at a young age the importance of geography. Be it through state capitals, international borders, or in this case flags, he was constantly quizing me on these items of geography. This in turn influenced my love of trivia and it’s profoundly true that he has impacted my life in this way.
