Different people define it differently, few like it simple and straight like - Web analytics is the measure of visitor behavior on a Website. Web Analytics Association defines it as "Web Analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of Internet data for the purposes of understanding and optimizing Web usage."
However, I like to define it as “The study of visitor, visitors navigation and traffic patterns to estimate the success of a web-site. It focuses on the indepth comparison of available visitor data, referral data and site navigation patterns. It also tells us the amount of traffic we receive over any specific period of time.”

It’s no different than any other technology and has its own list of jargons or terminologies for most of the steps/actions it does. Mentioning the brief about the key terminologies
a) Visit – When the user visits the site (visitor can make several visits and thus generate several page views).
b) Visitors – A system visit to the website is a visitor .
c) Page view – The count of the number of times a page is displayed during a visit. For say I see the same page 10 times in the same visit to the website.
d) Page views / visit – It’s the measure of the average number of pages viewed during a visit.
e) Bounce rate – It refers to the % of visits to website with only one page view and then the visitor leaves

One way to determine this is to find out how long on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem. We need to understand which content is attracting our audience, which pages are visited most and the reason behind their visit, the time period when visitors visit our website frequently etc.
Unique visitors counts are important in determining between new versus returning site user traffic. This data is helpful for counting hits to the landing page, and beneficial in counting hits to other pages within the site as well. High traffic, and high returning traffic numbers are indicative of a healthy on-line business. The more frequently a user visits the site, the more opportunity that they have to make a purchase. This report can be divided into two sections: the finding and analysis of visitors and recommendations. The analysis period is covered the whole data from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015. The one-year length is appropriate because it is an up-to-date data that shows a dynamic trend of website to evaluate and make a recommendation.
Total visits is a metric that represents how many times the customers came to the store. Acquiring a high number of visitors can affect the amount of profit. If the total number of visits are increasing each day, the stores are definitely doing something right. It is important to have customer visit the store because it shows that we are improving profits and building our loyal with the customers.
Page view- how many pages visitors need to view to find useful information. This metrics can be used to optimize navigation.
