Health and safety policies are implemented in every part of the workplace in the United Kingdom. Although the risks of injury in a GIS lab are low, sitting for long periods of time behind a computer screen has been proven to be adverse to many aspects of health including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and muscular skeletal issues (Dunstan et al., 2012). Regular breaks were encouraged and walks around the local area were commonplace to stretch and exercise during the workday.

Accidents that could happen in my work place could be: cuts and burns, e.g. in the kitchen; Back injuries/strains/sprains from poor handling/lifting techniques; tripping over from things left around the house. Sudden illnesses that could happen are: Strokes; heart attacks; epileptic fits; asthma attacks; diabetic emergencies; seizures; severe headaches; slurred speech; chest pain; difficulty breathing; sickness and diarrhea; vomiting/passing blood.
Within critical thinking I have learned critical thinking skills such as how to communicate appropriately through the use of writing. some of those skills include writing to discover patterns, find new ways of tackling a project, even to improve a new way of thinking (The Craft of research p.14). A good method of monitoring & improving are health, safety and security procedures are visually. Check visitors have signed in the visitor’s book, look for items blocking fire exits or hallways, wet signs are in place during cleaning, COSHH cupboards are kept locked, medication trolleys are secure, hoists are clean and stored in a correct storage place. Policies and procedures need to be reviewed regularly to ensure they are still relevant, circumstances in workplace can change and new risk assessments will need to be put in place or old ones reviewed. Reporting of Injuries,Diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations of 1995 requires the reporting of work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences. The Act applies to all work related activities, but not to all work related incidents. The objective of the regulations is to enable the enforcing authorities to identify where and how risks arise and to investigate serious accidents so as to prevent them from occurring in the future and thus providing a safer work environment. This increased use of computers, at home and within the workplace, combined with the amount of injuries that can be sustained has prompted the government to issue new legislation’s to accommodate the risks associated with them. While these new legislation’s serve as a requirement in a work environment they are only a recommendation at home. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which states the general regulations and responsibilities that can be applied across a wide variety of industries, has had a separate piece of legislation added to it to encompass the risks associated with computers and other forms of displays; The Health and safety (display screen equipment) regulations 1992. This was put into place to outline the dangers to, and requirements of both the employer and the employee, ensuring they maintain proper safety whilst partaking in the use of computers in the workplace. The responsibilities’ of the employer include a thorough risk assessment of the workstation, the provision of eye tests and training in regards of the risks to health whilst using the equipment and how to combat them, while the employee must co-operate with the employer, take responsibility for their own safety and those of others, and to use the equipment of its intended use. The legislation also refers to the type of equipment that is provided, primarily requiring them to be fit for purpose and adjustable.
