By looking at what the current model of the educational system is lacking can help to produce a clear picture of what the ideal educational system would be. Many people would agree that the current education system has failed to produce positive results. In many ways the current education system does not meet the needs of students. One problem of the current system is that it is a one fits all style of system. It does not recognize the different skill levels, learning styles or interests of students. From an early age, students are placed in classes based on age not skill level. Therefore it is likely that they will find some subjects too difficult, while other subjects at the same level they may find too easy. In an ideal education system, students would be able to take individual subjects at their skill level as opposed to taking all subjects at a level based on their age. The ideal education system would treat students as individuals with strengths and weaknesses. It would recognize that a group of children of the same age can have differing skill levels in a number of different areas. The ideal system would also be able to provide individual or small group instruction, particularly for students struggling in a subject. Education plays important role in society. It determines the final development of an adult’s personality. In today’s society most jobs require a University degree. To receive a University degree students need to rely on a good education system. Does America provide this? The American education system has relied on the grade point average system for a long time. The problem with this is there is not a universal GPA grade point system varying from course to course. This creates an inaccurate way to determine ones overall achievements. Teachers have different standards than others, grade inflation can occur and students can be exposed to different learning environments. Does the education system need to change to create fairness?
When schooling was first created in the US, there were not nearly as many rules. One-room schoolhouses where there were all different kinds of ages and education levels were the norm, and the type of education that was given to students was far different than what they receive today. As education developed and various needs came to light, larger schools were built and students were segregated based on criteria such as age. Separate schooling based on learning ability (special education) was something that came later, but it was eventually developed. The system that is available today is working well in many cases, but there are areas in which it is still failing the students - mainly because there are still too many countries getting ahead of the US in areas such as science and mathematics (Darling-Hammond, 2001; Figlio, 2002). Until the US takes back the number one spot, today's students will be at a disadvantage based on what they are learning and how they can put that education to use in the job market (Collins, 1999; Darling-Hammond, 2001).
There is a plethora of issues surrounding our current education system, the most important issue is that education is centered on the idea that only one person should do the thinking on any given topic. As a student, you are expected to learn the material by being lectured and learning the concrete facts that go into any given topic. The education model in the U.S. highly centers around examinations, we take tests throughout our entire education. Usually during grade school, class curriculum consisted of pop-quizzes, mid-terms, and finals. Pop quizzes are similar to the graded quizzes at UoPeople, there are given once every few weeks on recent topics. Finals are very common in schools, they are generally given at the end of a course and account for a larger part of your grade than pop-quizzes.
The current public education system claims to have the student’s best interest as a top priority, but in reality, it is actually harming the students. Almost all are short-changed the way education is set up now. Boys and girls learn in different ways. They are not different merely because of how they are treated in society, but because of how their brains function. However, when teachers try to teach different genders at the same time, the majority of the time, it just will not work. Badly needed are teachers that understand the differences between, and how to teach, boys and girls. Coed schools hurt more than they help, not allowing children to reach their potential. Single-sex schooling is more beneficial to the student’s learning.
I believe that the educational system is outdated because, they believe in good grades more than the students health and well-being, they put a lot of pressure on the participants to revise and push themselves to a point where in extreme cases students can develop mental illnesses and then that may lead to a higher dropout rate.
If ever there was an idea of redesigning the educational system, and the power of doing so was put in my hands, I would do many things differently to build a educational system that’ll bring honor, and pride to many schools around the world. Beginning with changing the age of enrolling into kindergarten. I would dedicate myself in creating a budget that wouldn’t prosecute extra circular activities such as sports, music, and art when struggling with financial issues. While being in control of the educational system I would also raise the GPA qualifications for athletes, and trash the assessment test. I would mold students in becoming ones with growth mindsets rather than fixed ones. While in the process of constructing this new educational system, I would conceder that not everyone is as blessed as others, and design a system that would give everyone an equal opportunity to succeed in the future. The program would be named Sky High. The name of the program is meant to motivate student to reach above, and beyond their limits.
The educational system has been a really big issue among educators. Which is a huge problem in the classrooms worldwide. This doesn’t help them plan for their future or give them any idea on what they want to in life. Simply put, agree with Gatto, the educational system shouldn’t split students up based off their test scores. When you separate students based on anything other than their passion you create an environment where they feel uncomfortable and unsuccessful. School days are very short and because of poor standard in teaching students lack the opportunity to learn material in efficient ways. Some of the recommendations to make the system more efficient are to increase the number of days in school year, students should be allowed to take special courses and they should not be restricted to stay in general educational programs only. To make the curriculum strong it should include the maximum number of required academic courses. The requirements have to be very content. There has to be tougher disciple and smaller classes in order to eliminate the problem. Policies and programs should be controlled, and counselors should have to have control over curriculum, and how the teaching occurs.
