What kind of learner am I? This is a question that used to bother me in the past and it still does. The goal of this essay is to answer my question and finding out more about my role in a team, the way I behave and why, so I can both improve as a person and as a member of group. In the following paragraphs, I will explain the Honey and Mumford’s Learning Styles theory (Gallagher, 2013) and the impact your learning style has in your group 's teamwork. I will discuss the type of members we can usually find in a group and in which category I include myself, but also about what learning styles I prefer and why.
The four major learning styles are learning methods that individuals naturally prefer, as illustrated by Honey, P. & Mumford, A. (1982) those styles are the Activist style, the Theorist style, the Pragmatist style and the Reflector Style where each of them has their own characteristics. The purpose of realising which style you prefer and understanding it is to maximise your learning capacity as P. Honey explained: “Learning to learn is your most important capability since it provides the gateway to everything else you want to develop”
Another important model that divides learning into separate styles is the Anthony Gregorc 's model which uses two perceptual qualities “Concrete” and “Abstract” and two ordering abilities “Random” and “Sequential”. The qualities and abilities combined all together result in Gregorc 's four styles: Concrete Sequential, Concrete Random,
To help me identify my own learning style(s) and that of a member of my team, I used the
A learning style is a particular way in which the mind receives and processes information. There are four types of Learning Styles: Visual (Sight), Auditory (Talk), Tactile (Hands-on),, and . I am an auditory learner which means I'm a talker. My weak learning style is
My learning style is a pragmatist since I like to get feedback from others about my work, I like to experiment and try things out and I would rather get on with tasks rather than talk about. The good learning situations from being a pragmatist is I have a clear link between thinking and what has to be done, when there are opportunities I always try to try them out, and I am happy to copy from role models since it benefits me as I gain more knowledge as to what I need to do. The bad learning situations I get from this is a m unable to identify the relevance of what sometimes needs to be done in a task and I do not like not having guidance on how to do things as I get stuck very easily.
All learners have different learning styles. Using materials at the initial stage of the learning process can highlight preferred styles. Honey and Mumford show four learning styles – activists, theorists, reflectors and pragmatists, while VAK highlights visual, auditory and kinaesthetic preferences.
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
After completing the assessment, the inventory concludes that my learning style is predominantly feeling and concrete experiences. For concrete experience, my score of 43 reveals my passion to learn information that I believe is relevant for myself. Subsequently, scoring 34 for active experimentation indicates my preference for applying and testing ideas to understand a concept. Additionally, scoring 25 for reflective observation reveals how I learn concepts through observing others complete a task. Scoring 18 for abstract conceptualization indicates how my learning style does not depend on facts and figure. With all of these learning styles, my graph illustrates strong areas in mode 4 and 1, however, it is immensely low in mode 2 and 1. Overall, my results showcase that I belong in mode 4 learning. The learning style inventory is accurate as it reveals that my strongest learning style is concrete experience. This
In this paper I will indentify various learning types and personality types. I will also develop strategies for communicating and collaborating effectively within group of people with different learning team learning styles and personality types. There are three basic learning styles. The most common are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. To learn, we depend on our senses to process the information around us. Most people tend to use of their senses more than the others. There are four different personality types are the organizer, adventure, giver, and thinker.
We all learn in different ways, influenced by the combination of our past educational experiences, study practices and personal approach to specific tasks. This can be described as our learning style, defined as ‘particular ways of gathering, processing and storing information and experiences’ (Cuthbert, P.F., 2005).
There are four main types of learning styles: auditory, kinaesthetic, reading and writing, and visual. Each of these theories describes how learning occurs and has its own terminology, perceptions on learning and generalities about teaching and learning. My personal learning style uses a combination of visual, reading, writing and auditory. I prefer using pictures,
If I could say who I am as a learner, I would say that I am a risk-taker, and am very knowledgeable. I like this because I am not afraid to try new things, but I still know what I am doing. If you don’t be a risk taker and try new things, you can never learn anything. These are two very good traits to have, but I still have goals. I want to be more reflective and look back on my mistakes so I can learn better. My goals for behavior are to talk less and get more work done. The best way for me to work is to get a lot done and then take a lot of little breaks, sometimes I get carried away and start to talk and it gets crazy. I learned about this trait when I was a lot younger when I would clean my room. I would get distracted and start playing around, and then I would stop and clean really fast so I could take a little break again. I think this is a result of what type of learner I am. My color quiz results said I am yellow. That means I am very enthusiastic and try to change things where I can. I like to change things to make them more fun. So when I work, I take
Learning styles and barriers to learning can be by the VARK to give a profile of learning preferences of how a person takes in and gives out information or Tidwell and Rodgers Practical learning styles Questionnaire. The VARK learning styles determines if the person learns by being a theorist, reflector, activist and/or pragmatist. The practical learning styles questionnaire looks at how people learn by their orientation, whether they are a realistic or creative, by their interaction, are they a doer or a thinker, by how they represent things, either by words or pictures, and how they process information, whether they are a surface or deep processor. There are many other
Q: What is my personal learning style and how would I ensure that I took advantage of learning opportunities?
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner
There are three main learning styles which are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. The three of these are different ways of how you prefer to learn, and how you consume information efficiently.
