What Makes A Good Coach? Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a coach as a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games, also a private teacher who gives someone lessons in a particular subject. So to lay it out, a coach trains athletes in a specific sport, make decisions, and to be a mentor, so a “good” coach would be someone who excels and goes above and beyond that specific definition. It only takes the average person to be a coach, but a good coach takes someone whose patient, in shape, and logical. Anyone can train an athlete, but for you truly help them and give them the best training, you must have patience. Helping athletes build on their skills, and fulfilling their potential doesn't just come within an hour or two, it takes dedication. If an athlete doesn't have a certain skill, you have to work until they develop it. Anybody can make decisions, but it's the logical ones that can win games. The difference between a coach and a good coach could come down the little things such a decisions. When to play someone, when to bring them out, not playing favorites and just playing who’s going to get the job done, etc. The ordinary coach wouldn’t realize if they make a bad decision, they make on the fly choices and don’t think of the effects. Such as having a child/relative on their team, the coach can say that they treat them as if they were just any other player, but to the other players on that team, there’s an obvious difference in the coach working with them vs. a different player. A good coach would separate their coach and player relationship, from their home relationship. Nobody should not know if they are
Coaching philosophies differ all over the world, from one sport to another. They are the central foundation to any good coach’s success in his/her respected programs. A coach’s philosophy does not only guide and lead the other members of the staff in the right direction, but it also allows each athlete to know what is expected of them, and how they should behave. By being aware of a coach’s philosophy, the athlete is fully responsible for his/her actions both on and off the field of play. In the words of the great Nick Saban, "It 's about what you control, every minute of every day. You always have to have a winning attitude and discipline, in practices, weight training, conditioning, in the classroom, in everything. It 's a process."
The biggest difference between good coaches and bad coaches is how they influence and handle a their players. A good coach can push a kids out of their comfort zone to make him/her play better. Good coaches also make the players a better person in society and help them gain confidence. A good coach is a fair coach who sees all of his athletes as equals even when some athletes are superior to others. A bad coach does the opposite of what good coaches. They have a negative effect on the children they coach. Bad coaches can make practice a hostile environment pushing the kids to their mental and physical limit. Coaches need to have certain skills and knowledge to undertake the role. In my opinion a coach needs to be patient, supportive, interested, aware of others as well as self, attentive and perceptive. Such elements underpin effective coaching and a genuine interest in the person being coached.
One definition of coaching is “Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance.” (Coaching for performance, Sir John Whitmore 1992). Or to expand on this; Simply defined, coaching is one person guiding another through a process, leading to performance enhancement. The applications can vary, support to achieve a specific project, helping an individual to do better what they already do well, or developing a skill they don't yet possess.
The relationship between an athlete and a coach is an unique and (humble??) one. It’s all about learning, growing, and overcoming failures to its successes. About looking forward to the future together in the game and beyond the life of sports. The interaction between them should be upheld and agreed upon, to be held together. They are the most influential character of the competitive environment. I believe in the value of a coach.
Joe Ehrmann describes how he has developed his philosophy of coaching by relating the story of his life in his youth, high school and in college describing two different types of coaches he had played for. The first are coaches who were impersonal, authoritarian, and sometimes abusive which he calls transactional coaches; this is in contrast to the humane coaches he calls transformative coaches. Coaches must face this responsibility because we all remember our coaches. “This is the awesome power and responsibility of coaching: You give your players memories, for better or for worse that stay with them until the day they die” (Ehrmann, 2011 p 46-47). I will inspire athletes to demonstrate good character. Sports do not have an influence on one’s character; however, coaches can strongly impact athletes’ character, both negatively and positively. For this reason, I will work to coach in ways that support the growth of athletes’ character and create learning opportunities and situations in which athletes can practice and learn from. As a coach, I will lead by example and demonstrate good character because actions speak louder than words. Through all of my research, one thing was constant; the single most important thing that a coach can do is build a relationship with their players. When coaches take their time to get to know each and every one of their players, the chances of the athlete respecting and responding to the coach are much greater. Giving the athlete a feeling of belonging, importance, and welcoming will increase their confidence and most likely their level of play as well. Finally, outside influence plays a key role in determining athletic success. Athletes must be motivated to push away negative influences, peer pressure and what others want. It’s important to have a good coach who cares about the athlete’s success and hones his skills. Coaches can mold an athlete’s physical and mental maturity and play a critical role in helping develop the athlete while putting them in a better position to handle success.
A person must have specific knowledge of the sport they desire to coach, because they have many duties that come with their job. “One of the main duties of the Coach is to put together a team of the best athletes available in the specific sport” (Field, 2012, p.115). The coach will portray that mistakes are not acceptable and the athletes should make as little mistakes as possible. The coach will also show that he/she does not have patience for the athletes that cannot pick up the skills quickly. The coach will condition them if they make mistakes. The coach will have a very loud strong voice, demanding, and intimidating attitude. The coach will enforce fundamentals and skills that the athlete will need to be successful in the sport.

Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
