Why Do Social Workers Use Micro Skills

Micro skills Last year, I worked as the Editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper. Therefore, interviewing another person is not a new experience for me. My past experience paired with my outgoing personality, I do not find interviews difficult. However, the type of interviews that social workers conduct are different than that of a news reporter. Social workers use micro skills to help guide and comfort a client through an interview process, which can be an awkward situation for a client. As I watched the recording of me interviewing Hannah, I recognized that my style of interviewing in a counseling position did not differ from the way it had when I was Editor. One strength that I attribute to that is my ability to think in my feet. If a client says something that deserves a follow-up question, I am quick to know what I want to ask. The way in which I word the question by using a what, why, how, etc. format is something that I need to work on, however. In addition, I already have a certain style of interviewing. I try to create an atmosphere that is open and engaging. The way that I talk to the person that I am interviewing is conversational. Because I already have that style, I need to backtrack and add more of the micro skills that I have learned about in class. Inserting those skills will not change my style in any major way, but I will be able to help the client more effectively. My greatest weakness is that I have not consciously thought about the skills that I have learned in class. I either get too focused on the conversation or resort back to the comfortable “news reporter” style of interviewing.
