Student Success helped me learn many things I thought I knew well. The steps to becoming an expert student are often overlooked. In Student Success, there are four skills that were the most helpful to me which are Time Management, Notes Taking, Taking Tests, and Problem Solving. Although I knew of these seemingly common skills beforehand, my skills have increased significantly with the help of Student Success. Before I began to take this class, the way I managed my time was inefficient. I prioritized quite poorly and I had difficulties keeping up with important tasks. I often found myself procrastinating and I had trouble making room for studying and doing homework in my busy work schedule. As I stressed with time management, I asked myself, should I be managing my time this way? or am I even managing my time at all? Another problem I faced was the way I took notes. I often wrote down extensive amounts of information and organized it poorly. I managed to grow accustomed to my strategy and became oblivious to my lack of efficiency. I had problems paying attention to the way my instructors taught which led to minimal comprehension with extensive criteria written down. I did not have many problems with the way I took tests but I did have problems controlling my test anxiety before I read about techniques to handle it. I used to rush on my tests and I hardly checked my answers. I always asked myself whether I took my tests properly or not. Problem
It’s hard for me to come up with specific examples for why I choose to get a doctoral degree. In all honesty, it’s hard for me to come up with a reason that I went to college at all. I am the only member of my mom’s family to graduate high school. College was never talked about. When I graduated highschool, I went into the military. I knew I wanted something more than to take over my mother used car business, but I had no idea on what I wanted to do. I was medically discharged from the Navy, and then had to figure out what I wanted to do. I went to film school and didn’t like it. I then tried a semester in business, but it didn’t seem to fit my personality. I remembered a time when I tutored inner city kids in Chicago. I felt like that I was making a difference, so I decided to go to school for education. I walked into my first practicum, and haven’t looked back since. But, the question was “why am i pursuing this advanced degree?” Well it didn’t hit me until I was going for my masters degree. I was doing the work and it all seemed wrong. It seemed like what I was learning was going to hurt education, not help it. I decided then, that I would go further and try to change the trend. That technology is supposed to be a tool, not the end all. That if we make kids relient on technology it was going to kill their problem solving skills, their coping skills, and their personal relation skills. I also want to educate teacher on how to use technology to enrich
Reading the article Lake and von Baeyer (2005) “Tips for Successful Students”, I realize that most characteristics are necessary for one to succeed as a student in any area of life. For example, one must ask questions and take notes in order to interact with the professor and further their knowledge in a particular subject. These two skills coincide together along with the initiative to achieve a certain stardom. One aspect of learning is never lonesome, though it is possible to be additionally gifted in one region over another.
Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study?
The article “Secrets of the Most Successful College Students” by Annie Murphy Paul provides advice as well as experiences of wise students that can be implemented into the academic careers of any determined learner. This article is relevant to my life since I am a student planning to go to college. Many of the advice that was stated is already applied to the way in which I learn now. Becoming aware of the success that could follow from putting this well-advised information into effect is inspiring.
students develop skills that will last a lifetime. One way we can do this is to help students
I have poor attitudes towards managing time, such as managing time to study. Developing effective study habits is important as they will help me to use my study time more productively and will also help to handle stress. Therefore, learning some effective memory techniques, developing a good support network and working with other class members will enhance our study habits (Anthony, 2012). So it is important for me to make an action plan about time
When I first evaluated myself in the study skill academic test, time management was my weakest skill overall. This was priority in terms of skill development because I would always leave things till the last minute and stress myself out trying to turn in things on time. In order to improve this I made a smart goal to carry out in the beginning of the year. Now after some time, the results of my progression are shown. My smart goal that I created for myself regarding my time management planned out very well, I was able to successfully accomplish a majority of my assignments on time. I would review the material of the week on Monday’s and compile all of the assignments due for the week. The monthly calendar was also a key factor in helping me keep up to date in the month so see what where upcoming tasks the following week. If I needed more clarification on certain tasks then I would login and check the syllabus.
This problem influences my academic and personal life because I cannot manage my time correctly in order to be successful. Firstly I am not organized and I don’t have any plan to set and apply. This shows clearly the difficulty of my critical situation. I became to feel anxious and nervous all the time and also it affects on my grade. According to this I must change the way I deal with my time by changing the methodology and follow other time management strategies. The reality that I never have manage my time and now I regret
Upon reviewing the “Best Strategies for success in school” I realize that I now apply many ideas I use to ignore to my school approach such as getting to know my instructors, breaking down projects into more manageable tasks to avoid procrastination, and staying healthy. All the strategies listed are important but the three key strategies that will remain with me the longest throughout my academic career will be to getting help with difficult class work early, keeping most
Being a successful student may involve some of the characteristics such as: organization, time, studying, and believing you can achieve.
Life as a university student can be tough, but to make sure you get your money and times worth out of it you need to know how to be a successful student. Academic success could never be fully measured by degrees alone, but it can include a person’s well-being as well as their mind and certain characteristics about a person that make them unique. This success can be achieved in different ways by these different people with different strengths, but there is the same ultimate goal in sight of each and every student enrolled in college at some point. However, this goal of being successful in not only school but in life, can sometimes turn out to be the opposite of how we plan. Of course, a student can achieve success by earning degrees and still fail in life. Academic success can also be a huge constituent to a students vocational calling in college as young students make a transition into adulthood.
Everyone can be successful in life but it requires some responsibilities. Success doesn’t happen right away, so it takes time and patience’s for things to fall into place. When you accomplish great things in life it feels great. A successful student needs to use self-discipline and making wise decisions.
Time management is the key thing of successful. I am not good in managing time because I don’t organize my study time carefully and not use my time wisely during work. I always leave everything until the last minute, and sometimes I do unimportant things like playing games, surfing internet and watching movie, but actually I know there a lot of work to finish off. I get to the bottom of this crisis and try to systematize my study and set up my work. I make a schedule of revision, and I put a date where I need to complete the schoolwork. I also make a small target, for example, I want to understand the concept of heat transfer by the end of this week, and I have to achieve it no matter what. I
