Plato stated that education and learning should continue until the age of 40 in B.C. 385. Many would now fell that he put too early a date on its closure. However the whole of life is learning therefore education can have no endings (Lindeman, 1926: 181). Why human being learn has a basic response; change is all around us and it affects everything on the world. To keep step with changes, people need to learn to keep up with change. As Kolb (1984) mentioned learning is people’s primary mode of adaptation to change. It is not only people who learn and try to adapt themselves, organisations can also be regarded as entities which are capable of learning and adapting to changes. Knowledge is an asset and core competence for both human and organisations and provides competitive advantage to them. Especially after 1990s, the world has started a new and fast transition process which is known as globalisation. Due to the fact that business globalisation has affected every organisations, they have to depend qualified employee force that is known as professionals (knowledge workers) if they desire to remain sustainable competitive advantage by knowing how to do. Fast changes in today’s world, people try to acquire newest knowledge for tomorrow’s success and technical skills to alive (Handy, 1993). Knowledge work is characterized by rapid and unpredictable changes that needs to ability to learn and continue learning for individuals and for organisations (Huczynski, Buchanan, 2007).
A Stronger Focus on Application of Knowledge and Skills: This is about the need of today’s learner to acquire knowledge that is are relevant and can be applied in global issues like problem solving, creativity, communication, interpersonal skills, curiosity, innovation, and others.
Humans by nature never stop learning; we undertake learning at different stages of our lives and acquire skills and competences in variety of areas. These learning may have been certified (by an academic or educational body) whilst others are not certified learning through work, social and leisure time activities. Recognising
Many people are comfortable with their career and/or degree once they have been achieved. Once someone has accomplished their life long goal, they usually settle down and do not continue to educate themselves on anything other than what is within their field. Many individuals stay in their comfort zone, whether it be being a cashier, a doctor, a lawyer, an architect, a musician, a teacher, etc. They do not feel the need to expand their knowledge because that is not their job, but someone else’s. That should not be the case, though. Individuals should always strive to be better and more educated no matter what degree, past education, or career they have. The short story by Torie Bosch titled “First, Eat All the Lawyers,” is effective in using
The contemporary education should rather prepare students to what Brighouse defines as the self-governance that helps students to keep learning independently of educators. Today, people cannot stop progressing and learning anymore. Otherwise, they face the problem of the backwardness that deteriorates their competiveness in the labor market and just drop out of the mainstream culture. Therefore, the development of lifetime learning is the objective necessity and Brighouse gives implications to the importance of the lifetime education. This need derives from changes in human life and society driven by technological progress and other changes that take place in the contemporary world and will take place in the future. Today, the basic education students receive at school or college is not enough anymore since their knowledge and skills will simply become out of date in several years in the
Learning to be an effective human being takes a lot of work. It is a process that does not happen overnight. It is a process to become an effective person. According to Covey, 2013 it is a seven step process. Then we add being Christian into it. It is helpful being a Christian because we should already have these basic concepts down. For the non-Christian, they will have to really work on making personality, principle and mental changes.
Education plays a vital role in this era. I support that education should not only be focused on books but also on critical sense and practical knowledge. Students should be able to experiment with the technological advancement and its outcomes.
The critically acclaimed novel written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818, delves into a multitude of universal themes throughout the text. One value that drives the plot forward, and leads to character development is the theme, human fulfillment of the pursuit of knowledge. It is Dr. Frankenstein 's unquenchable thirst for knowledge that leads to the future predicaments that ensue after the Creature is conceived and future moral dilemma. An example of Dr. Frankenstein 's disposition that lends itself to the validity of the stated theme, is as follows; “It was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn; and whether it was the outward substance of things, or the inner spirit of nature and the mysterious soul of man that occupied me, still my inquiries were directed to the metaphysical, or, in its highest sense, the physical secrets of the world” (Shelley 30). The doctor 's preoccupation with his studies, that results in controversy over the suitable nature of such an unobtainable desire, is clearly exemplified in the quote, “If the study to which you apply yourself has a tendency to weaken your affections and to destroy your taste for those simple pleasures in which no alloy can possibly mix, then that study is certainly unlawful, that is to say, not befitting the human mind” (45).
Yet even with these realizations that delve into the deeper meaning of education, modern education is still calling for simple measurable outcomes and continues to be geared towards specific employment ideas. This model of education is blatantly inadequate though. Many students today will end up holding jobs not yet invented in fields not yet discovered, so the teaching of answers to today’s questions is utterly useless. Albert Einstein once said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” and this statement reigns true throughout time. To continue academic success, the education system needs to impart a mastery of one’s own mind that allows students to not only answer current questions but also to pose questions that will shape the future world.
Have you ever wondered how the brain develops while we learn? Dr. Rita Smilkstein’s research on The Natural Human Learning Process was interesting. I now know the parts of the brain and how they work. I know now how we learn and how emotions have an impact on how we learn. As college students, we need to understand how our brains work and how emotions can help us learn successfully, since all college students should want to become successful people in their lives during college and throughout their lives.
"Education is life--not a mere preparation for an unknown kind of future living…The whole of life is learning; therefore, education can have no ending. This new venture is called adult education--not because it is confined to adults but because adulthood, maturity defines its limits." (Lindeman, E.1926p.6)
With the rapid-development of the technology, more and more advance technical advices come to human’s daily life. People could have more choices of technology product to handle their daily issues, such as calculator and computer. In addition to this, digital technology becomes popular in some academic situations. These new tools might be used for help students to think the objectives of the higher-education. Cathy Davidson, the author of “Project Classroom Makeover”, claimed that advanced technology devices might have additional function not only helping students for study.
(2007). Workplace changes and workplace learning: advantages of an educational micro perspective. International Journal of Lifelong Education, 26(6), 675-688. doi:10.1080/02601370701711364
As such concepts as lifelong learning and the knowledge society gain prominence, education and training become key vehicles for preparing people to be adaptable to economic changes in society. As Habermas (1972) indicated, adult education is a moral and political endeavor as much as it is a technical practice. Thus, it is affected by its role in maintaining or challenging the social order.
Lifelong learning is the continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the life of an individual. The first characteristic of lifelong learning is that it encompasses both formal and non-formal/informal types of education and training. Formal learning includes the hierarchically structured school system that runs from primary school through the university and organized school-like programs created in business for technical and professional training. Whereas informal learning describes a lifelong process whereby individuals acquire attitudes, values, skills and knowledge from daily experience and the educational influences and resources in his or her environment, from family and neighbors, from work and play,
Most people believe that, learning is done only through formal education and that this process stops once they graduate but this is not true. According to Delors’ (1996) four ‘pillars’ of education for the future, lifelong learning can be defined as one which is done throughout a person’s lifetime. It is adjustable, diverse and attainable all through the various stages of human life. This points out that, learning is not done through formal means only and cannot be avoided as one progresses through life’s various stages (from infancy till death).
