Discussion Question Willpower is something that everyone has, it is just that majority of people do not know how to use it efficiently. It is explained from the beginning of the willpower instinct that people often set goals then lose control of themselves. Having experienced failure in obtaining my goals in the past, now that we are tackling willpower challenges I have been more productive toward my goals. One of the reasons that we tell ourselves that we can’t achieve our goals, is because of the many changes that we must make in ourselves and it seems impossible. I can build on this because I have told myself that this will never work but I have had more success now than I have before. When you
Very few people in the world today have the willpower to over come great obstacles. Eric
Dweck, in her article “Brainology Transforming Students' Motivation to Learn,” argues that not everyone is born with a talent, and genetics and personality have no determination of their intelligence. Rather, it’s about the ability to push yourself and to understand the harder you work at something, the more potential you have to be smarter. She claims that children with a fixed mindset assume that their character, intelligence, and creative ability are unchangeable in any meaningful way, often viewing talents as gifts – you either have them or you don’t. Dweck also claims that with the fixed mindset also have a tendency to give up easily when facing a challenge, sometimes avoiding them altogether, ignoring useful negative feedback, and feeling threatened by the success of others. A growth mindset, on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence, but rather as a heartening springboard for growth and stretching our existing abilities. Dweck sees these types of people as having a tendency to embrace challenges, see effort as the path to success, and learn from criticism. As a result, they reach a higher level of achievement, all of which gives them a greater sense of free

The one area in my life right now that I use a lot of willpower is my lifestyle. I recently had gotten of track with my weight and eating habits. I’m trying to get back on track but it has been a challenge. I have to have the power to not eat the snacks and try to eat healthier snacks. I give the attention to the things that matter the most to me.
When undertaking a mission, a person is often driven to reach a goal or achievement. Occasionally, people commit themselves to a task that may seem impossible, but complete it anyways. The force that drives people like Farah Ahmedi, who escaped her war torn country on a prosthetic leg, Aengus who spent his entire life searching for a girl who he fell for, or John Steinbeck who traveled all throughout the U.S. in a camper with nothing but his dog, is much more powerful than any magic spell or super power. Using determination, you can push through hardships and undertake missions just like Ahmedi, Steinbeck, and Aengus.
I can plan hundreds of ways to manage my tasks, but ultimately, no work will be completed if I spend all my time planning. Sometimes, being too optimistic can be a downfall - especially in this circumstance. I need to establish a firmer sense of motivation and resolution to accomplish my goals. Planning has its place, but after I create a course of action, I need to not procrastinate and follow through to get work done. This occurs in so many aspects of my life: school, housework, band events, and even in amounts of sleep. When a flaw impacts everything I do (or plan to do), it ought to be
Being determined will help one overcome adversity.Take for example Jim Abbott, who was born without a right hand.He played baseball which put him at disadvantage , but with the help of his parents and coaches.“"It was my parents, my coaches and teachers, literally pulling me to the side and saying you can do
“By the end of the day you must achieve something tangible in order to feel good about yourself. No matter how much you may feel you deserve a day of rest, if the day passes without some form of achievement, no matter how small, you will feel dissatisfied.” (PH.Ds, Clifton, O., Anderson, E., Schreiner, L., Pg 26) When I read this quote in our StrengthsQuest text I felt as if I was describing my own personality while starring at myself in the mirror. If there was a sentence to explain “Chrissy” this would be it, or at least a very good candidate when summarizing my number one strength. After completing my StrengthQuest survey online and analyzing my results with the three people who
According to Judy Willis, “When you are experiencing highly negative emotions or severe stress, incoming information is routed to a different part of your brain”. When the high-level thinking happens, the information routed is to the reactive lower brain. When that happens, the memory is affected, all active learning stops. A fourth way is recognized and valuing incremental progress boosts a person’s motivation and enables him or her to deal effectively with setbacks. According to Dweck, “people with growth mindsets, believe their abilities can be developed though dedication and hard work- brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have these qualities.” With a growth mindset, people realized by having a failure in the past don’t mean they will in the future.
As stated above, apathy can help motivate some people. In fact, the Greeks had an entirely different idea behind the word apathy. In the original Greek word, apatheia was defined as the insensibility to pain or suffering. The Greeks had an idea that one should push through and even ignore pain. In this way of thinking, the Greeks believed being they could be objective or impartial due to non-suffering. When properly reflected upon, apathy can, in fact, inspire a person to push past the fear of pain or failure. It is important to understand that failure will happen, yet when it does we must bounce back, learn from our mistakes, and press on. We cannot hide from failure, it will come regardless, or we will grow apathetic to the situation. If we truly have an interest in the goal, then it is imperative to stand up and face what may happen. While it may hurt, and may even in fact frighten us, we must push forward. We must not concern ourselves with the pain, the fear, and the failure and focus on the goal. We may learn from all of these.
The term “consent capacity” describes an adult’s ability to understand information relevant to making an informed, voluntary decision. A wide variety of diseases, disorders, conditions, and injuries can affect a person’s ability to understand such information.
I will be able to prosper and flourish with a strong intelligent mind. An intelligent mind will allow me to make smart decisions and live an accomplished and fulfilling life. I believe in a strong work ethic. I believe that if I have the right strength and a positive mind set that I will be able to thrive in this world. A strong work ethic has allowed me to create strong relationships with others, and it has made be a better person. I have a strong work ethic because I believe in everything that I set my mind to. I believe that strength is not given, it is earned. I have the determination and the heart to build up strength in every part of my life. I believe that building up strength takes time and that it is built through experiences. When someone is negative towards me, I use that experience as motivation to have the strength to speak up for myself the next time that something like that happens towards me. I believe that strength is used in all aspects of my life. In my life, I have had a plethora of experiences where I have had to build up strength, whether it be the strength to stand up for myself after someone has been rude to me, or the strength to run forty walls in a row during volleyball practice. I believe that in order to do extraordinary things, I must have the
In our daily lives we encounter temptations and regardless of resisting or falling for them is due to the amount of willpower you posses.
