Leadership is one of those terms that get used very often, but it has a variety of meanings. The traits you use as a leader always changes depending on the time, place, and situation, and it is the good ones that knows when to make the change. Leadership also has many styles Example, do you use dictator like style, who rules with an iron fist and persecutes people with different ideas, or do you have a more democratic approach. “Every leader has a particular style of leadership that is innate. However, the behaviors, attitudes or methods of delivery that are effective for one staff member may in fact be counterproductive for another,” says Michael Burke, account supervisor, MSR Communications, a public relations firm. “Great leaders are aware of their own style and make the effort to learn how their style actually comes across to their team. They learn to flex their leadership style to individual team members so that they communicate and behave in ways that motivate and inspire.”

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s informational speech, “First Fireside Chat”, was broadcasted on Sunday, March 12, 1933 to the people of the United States, in the midst of the Great Depression. In this speech, Roosevelt talked about the Emergency Banking Act and the different effects it would have throughout the country. While speaking, he used words and phrases to try to connect more with the people. Through his timeliness, his strong, emotional words, his reputation, and his logical reasoning, he achieved his goal with this speech.
On May the Twelfth 1933 president Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the first of what would come to be known as fireside chats. During this chat he spoke to the American people about the recent banking holiday and what actions where to be taken to prevent the banking crisis from worsening. Each fireside chat addressed the issues that had occurred and his ideas for improvement. For instance, as banks shut down then later reopened, citizens were hesitant to secure their money in the reopened banks. However, in one of FDR’s fireside chats he motivated the nation to trust the bank when he stated; “People will again be glad to have their money where it will be safely taken care of and where they can use it conveniently at any time. I can assure you my friend, that it is safer to keep your money in a reopened bank than under your bed.” This shows that FDR wanted to motivate the country and demonstrate a recovery for the economy. Another example of his effective communication skills occurred in 1932, during his presidential campaign. FDR presented a speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. The speech addressed FDR’s belief that change was possible. The country had lost hope when the economy collapsed in 1929, but FDR was willing to restore this by positively communicating his ideas. Leadership is a personal skill that has to be developed and improved upon daily, just like an athlete works on his craft. We all come from different walks of life and that is often a factor in the way our leadership styles are shaped. Our differences of race, gender, religion, home environment, and lifestyle all have an effect on the way we are led growing up. It is a skill that is mastered over time, while never being perfected. Like anything else in life, leadership skills are often developed from who we are, where we come from and the people in our life who have taught us their knowledge.

The preceding three years were three years of significant hardship that took a toll on the nation’s morale. He won the presidency in a landslide vote over the fairly conservative incumbent Herbert Hoover showing the American people were desperate for changes that could restore the nation to economic prosperity seen in the 1920’s.
