BATTLE OF MEIKTILA

INTRODUCTION

1. Gentlemen, I welcome you all in today 's study period on "Battle of Meiktila" in the context of Burma Campaign. The significance of Burma Campaign in the course of world war II was of equal importance from both Allied and Axis points of view as that of other theatres of war. Burma was turned into the theatre of war during the third year of the world war II. Two major regional powers, one Asian ie Japan and another European ie Great Britain fought this war.

2. The "Battle of Meiktila" was not a battle fought in isolation. It was one of the three decisive battles among the series of battle fought in Burma front by the Allied forces against the Japanese in the process of reconquest of Burma. …show more content…

The Japan 's plan was based on assumption that after the initial attempt by the US and Britain, to break the defensive perimeter had failed, these powers would accept a negotiated plan on the basis of status quo.

TOPOGRAPHY

8. Area. Burma, a diamond shaped country with a long tail projecting south is located in the South East Asia. It is bounded by India, Bangladesh and Bay of Bengal on the west, India and Chine on the north, China, French Indo-China (Combodia) and Thailand on the east and Bay of Bengal on the south. The total area is 2,40,000 square miles.

9. Terrain. Burma is dominated by a series of folded mountain ranges in the west and a block-faulted massif in the east. The western hilly zone containing the Letha Range, the China Hills and the great Arakan Yama reaches 10,000 ft. at Mount Victoria. Further north in Kachin State, the country becomes even more mountainous, rising to 20,560 ft. at Hkakabo Ravi, the highest peak in burma. Between the mountain and the massif tie the central low lands extending from the deltas of Irrawaddy and Sittang to the interior plain of Mandalay. There are good no of rivers with their fributaries all over the country. the main rivers of Burma are the Irrawaddy, the Sittang, the Chindwin and the Salween. All the rivers are flowing from north to south.
