Question

It keeps saying my answer is wrong, but I do not understand why with the structure they gave me to work with. If I try to add a double bond to N it says both N and O have valence issues

Step 1

A Lewis Structure is a very simplified representation of the valence shell electrons in a molecule. It is used to show how the electrons are arranged around individual atoms in a molecule. Lone pair of electrons are shown as "dots" on an atom and for bonding electrons as a line between the two atoms. The goal is to obtain the stable electron configuration, i.e., the octet rule and formal charges need to be satisfied.

Formal charge on an atom can be calculated as:

BE
Formal charge = VE - NE
2
Where, VE = valence electrons
NE non-bonding electrons
BE bonding electrons

Step 2

For the Lewis structure of CH3NO2 :

Carbon atom has 4 valence electrons so it will form 4 single bonds (3 with H atom and 1 with N atom) and hence its octet is satisfied.

Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons, out of which 3 electrons takes part in forming bonds and 2 electro...
