Question

A compound made up of elements ‘A’ and ‘B’ crystallises in a cubic close
packed structure. Atoms A are present on the corners as well as face
centres, whereas atoms B are present on the edge-centres as well as
body centre. What is the formula of the compound?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given data:

The atoms present in the compound are A and B.

The crystallization takes place in a cubic close-packed structure.

Atoms A present on the corners as well as face centers.

Atoms B is present on the edge-centers as well as the body center.

To find:

The formula of the compound.

Step 2

The total number of atoms of A can be calculated as shown below:

Cubic close-packed structure has 8 corners. Atoms A is present in the corners. One atom is shared by 8 corners of the cube. Therefore the number of A atoms present at the corners is 18×8=1.

Cubic close-packed structure has 6 faces. Atoms A are also present at the face centers. The one atom is shared by the two faces in the cube. Therefore the number of A atoms present at the face centers is 12×6=3.

On adding the number of A atoms present at the corners and the number of A atoms present at the face centers, the total number of atoms A=1+3=4.
