Skeletal structure of N2 is given below. Each nitrogen atoms contribute 5 electrons and hence total number of valence electrons is 10.

Step 2

Each bond contributes two electrons. 2 electrons are reduced from the total number of valence electrons and the remaining 8 distributed on atoms so that it obeys octet rule. However, a nitrogen atom does not obey octet rule. So both nitrogen atoms make a triple bond with each other (each nitrogen is surrounded by 3 bond pair and a lone pair of electrons).
