Question

Draw the Lewis Dot structure for N2 (on paper, not on Canvas) then answer the questions.

a. How many total valence electrons are in N2? Express your answer as a whole number.

b. How many single bonds are in N2?  Express your answer as a whole number.

c. How many double bonds are in N2?  Express your answer as a whole number.

d. How many triple bonds are in N2?  Express your answer as a whole number.

Step 1

Skeletal structure of N2 is given below. Each nitrogen atoms contribute 5 electrons and hence total number of valence electrons is 10.

Step 2

Each bond contributes two electrons. 2 electrons are reduced from the total number of valence electrons and the remaining 8 distributed on atoms so that it obeys octet rule. However, a nitrogen atom does not obey octet rule. So both nitrogen atoms make a triple bond with each other (each nitrogen is surrounded by 3 bond pair and a lone pair of electrons). Lewis structure of N2 is give below.

Step 3

From Lewis structure it is clear that,

(a) Total number of valence electrons is 10 ( 3 bond pair and 2 lone pair).

(b) No single bond is pres...
