Hello, my name  is Veronica Robles. I am taking math 1342 online of elementary stastical at San Jacinto College.  I am having trouble with this math problem in my homework.  A student receives the following grades, with an A worth 4 points, a B worth 3 points, a C worth 2 points, and a D worth 1 point. What is the student's weighted mean grade point score ?

B in 3- two credit classes

D in 1 - two-credit classes

A in 1 - three-credit classes

C in 1 - three-credit classes

Mean grade point score? ( Round to the nearest tenth as needed.)

Can you please explain this math problem to me because I am having trouble understanding grade point score?  Thank you.

Step 1

Introduction:

The performance of a student in a test can be expressed in several ways, such as in grades or marks or points.

Here, a relationship is given between the grade and the points, so that, if the grade is known, the number of points scored can be easily obtained and if the number of points scored by a student is known, the grade can be easily obtained.

According to the rule, if a student obtains grade A in a class, it is similar to their scoring 4 points. Similarly, if the student gets grades B, C or D, it means that they score 3 points, 2 points or 1 point, respectively, in the class.

The score (points) obtained by a student is thus “coded” using the alphabets or grades A, B, C and D. Thus,

Step 2

Formula:

The formula for the weighted mean for the variable x taking n values x1, x2, …, xn with respective frequencies f1, f2, …, fn is:

Step 3

Calculation:

While finding the grade point average, the number of credits associated with a particular class is the frequency of that class. Here, denote fi as the credit associated with the ith class i = 1, 2, …, 6 (as there are 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6 classes).

For convenience, number the classes from 1 to 6.

To find the student’s weighted mean grade po...
