Introduction:

The production of leucocytes (white blood cells) is referred to as leucopoiesis. It is categorized into:

  1. Granulopoiesis: Development of granulocytes (neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils).
  2. Agranulopoiesis: Development of agranulocytes. To an extent, they develop in the bone marrow, but their major site of origin is in the lymphoid tissues (spleen, thymus, tonsils, Peter's patches, and lymph nodes) from the stem cells that originally come from bone marrow. The pluripotent stem cell is differentiated into myeloblast, monoblast, and lymphoblast. The lymphoblast will develop into prolymphocytes, then to large lymphocytes, and then into lymphocytes (small T and B cells). In humans, 3.5 × 1010 lymphocytes per day enter the circulation through the thoracic duct alone. However, at any given time, only about 2 percent of the body's total lymphocytes are in the peripheral blood, and the remaining are present in the lymphoid organs. Monopoiesis initiates with the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into monoblast, then to promonocyte, and then to monocyte.
