You work in a facility that produces about 150,000 ton/y of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). MTBE is an oxygenated fuel additive that is blended with gasoline to promote CO2 formation over CO formation during combustion. The facility manufactures MTBE from methanol and isobutylene.

The feeds and products prices are:

Mixed-butenes feed:                 $ 0.35/kg

Methanol feed:                          $ 3.3/L (Density = 792 kg/m³)

Process Water:                          $ 1.00 per ton

Product MTBE :                         $ 3.15/L (Density =  740 kg/m³)

Butene product waste stream:   $ 0.34/kg

The properties of main feed and product streams are shown in Table Q2
