Question

You have a population with 3 BB, 8 Bb, and 2 bb genotypes.

What is the frequency of the B allele?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Introduction :

According to the Hardy-Weinberg principle, allele frequencies in a population are stable and remain constant throughout generations in the absence of additional evolutionary influences such as gene flow, genetic drift, mutation, genetic recombination, and natural selection. Mathematically it can be written as ;

p²+2pq+q² = 1   and      p + q = 1     ; where

p² = frequency of homozygous dominant genotype

2pq = frequency of heterozygous genotype

q² = frequency of homozygous recessive genotype

p = frequency of dominant allele

q = frequency of recessive allele
