Chapter 1, Problem 1.38ACA
Monitoring the production of soft-drink cans. The Wakefield plant of Coca-Cola and Schweppes Beverages Limited (CCSB) can produce 4,000 cans of soft drink per minute. The automated process consists of measuring and dispensing the raw ingredients into storage vessels to create the syrup, and then injecting the syrup, along with carbon dioxide, into the beverage cans. In order to monitor the subprocess that adds carbon dioxide to the cans, five filled cans are pulled off the line every 15 minutes, and the amount of carbon dioxide in each of these five cans is measured to determine whether the amounts are within prescribed limits.
- a. Describe the process studied.
- b. Describe the variable of interest.
- c. Describe the sample.
- d. Describe the inference of interest.
- e. Brix is a unit for measuring sugar concentration. If a technician is assigned the task of estimating the average brix level of all 240,000 cans of beverage stored in a warehouse near Wakefield, will the technician be examining a process or a population? Explain.

Although millions of elephants once roamed across Africa, by the mid-1980s elephant populations in African nations had been devastated by poaching. Elephants are important to African ecosystems. In tropical forests, elephants create clearings in the canopy that encourage new tree growth. In savannas, elephants reduce bush cover to create an environment that is favorable to browsing and grazing animals. In addition, the seeds of many plant species depend on passing through an elephant’s digestive tract before germination.
The status of the elephant now varies greatly across the continent. In some nations, strong measures have been taken to effectively protect elephant populations; for example, Kenya has destroyed over five tons of elephant ivory confiscated from poachers in an attempt to deter the growth of the illegal ivory trade (Associated Press, July 20, 2011). In other nations, the elephant populations remain in danger due to poaching for meat and ivory, loss of habitat, and…
Cecille Paper Company uses softwood and hardwood pulp as basic materials for producing converter-grade paper. Hardwood is 80% pulp fiber and 20% pulp binder, while softwood is 50% pulp fiber and 50% pulp binder. The cost per pound for hardwood and softwood is $.50 and $.40, respectively. The company s quality control expert specifies that in order for the product to meet quality standards, each batch must contain at least 12,000 pounds of pulp fiber and at least 6,000 pounds of pulp binder. Because of equipment limitations, the size of a batch cannot exceed 24,000 pounds. The Production Department recently received a new standard from the Cost Department, allowing $8,200 per batch. The production manager feels that this amount is too low, because such costs have never been less than $8,400. Required: Using the graphic method, determine the hardwood and softwood mix necessary to minimize the cost per batch.
An article on the PureEnergySystems.com website written by Louis LaPoint discusses a product called acetone. The article stated that “Acetone 1CH3COCH32 is a product that can be purchased inexpensively in most locations around the world, such as in common hardware, auto parts, or drug stores. Added to the fuel tank in tiny amounts, acetone aids in the vaporization of the gasoline or diesel, increasing fuel efficiency, engine longevity, and performance—as well as reducing hydrocarbon emissions.” To test whether this product actually does increase fuel efficiency in passenger cars, a consumer group has randomly selected 5 people to participate in the study. The following procedure is used:
People are to bring their cars into a specified gasoline station and have the car filled with regular, unleaded gasoline at a particular pump. Nothing extra is added to the gasoline at this fill-up. The car’s odometer is recorded at the time of fill-up.
When the tank is nearly empty, the person is…

- 23. Consider a simple economy with just two industries: farming and manufacturing. Farming consumes 1/2 of the food and 1/3 of the manufactured goods. Manufacturing consumes 1/2 of the food and 2/3 of the manufactured goods. Assuming the economy is closed and in equilibrium, find the relative outputs of the farming and manufacturing industries.arrow_forwardA refinery has two smelters that extract metallic iron ore. Smelter A pro- cesses 1000 tons of iron ore per hour and uses 7 megawatts of energy per hour. Smelter B processes 2000 tons of iron ore per hour and uses 13 megawatts of energy per hour. Each refinery must be operated at least 8 hours per day and, of course, no more than 24 hours. If the refinery must process at least 30,000 tons of iron ore per day, how many hours should each smelter operate in order to expend as little energy as possible? THE CENTRAL BINJ IS OWNED COOPERATIVELY, AND IT IS TO EVERY FARMER'S BENEFIT TO MAKE THE UNLOADING/STORAGE PROCESS AS EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE. THE COST OF PINEAPPLE DETERIORATION CAUSED BY UNLOADING DSELAYS AND THE COST OF TRUCK RENTAL AND IDLE DRIVER TIME ARE SIGNIFICANT CONCERNS TO THE COOPERATIVE MEMBERS . ALTHOUGH FARMERS HAVE DIFFICULTY QUANTIFYING CROP DAMAGE, IT IS EASY TO ASSIGN A WAITING AND UNLOADING COST FOR TRUCK AND DRIVER OF P 18 PER HOUR . - Whenever Toronto has severe snow storm, many flights are delayed and Pearson International Airport has to deploy resources to clear the apron, taxiways and runaways to ensure that the airport continues to remain operational in addition to making sure all the departing aircraft are completely de-iced before they take-off. This is a critical safety measure as aircraft with ice buildup on the wings or the fuselage during take-off can be catastrophic. At the same time, the de-icing operation is extremely time consuming and costly, and must be accurately factored into the forecast of an airport's operation to ensure optimal and safe performance. You are the Operations Manager at Pearson International Airport, and after reviewing the snowfall patterns for the last 10 years, you have determined the following probabilities: The chance of having a severe snow storm during the winter season is 0.15 The chance of having major flight delays during the winter season is 0.35 Amongst the days there…arrow_forwardIn order to get toys in its stores by October, Specialty places one-time orders with its manufacturers in June or July of each year. Demand for children’s toys can be highly volatile. If a new toy catches on, a sense of shortage in the marketplace often increases the demand to very high levels and large profits can be realized. On the other hand, new toys can also flop, leaving Specialty stuck with high levels of inventory that must be sold at reduced prices. The most important question the company faces is deciding how many units of a new toy should be purchased to meet expected sales demand. If too few are purchased, sales will be lost; if too many are purchased, profits will be reduced because of low prices realized in clearance sales. 1. Use the sales forecaster’s prediction to describe a normal probability distribution that can be used to approximate the demand distribution. Sketch the distribution and show its mean and standard deviation. 2. Compute the probability of a stock-out…arrow_forwardJohnson Industries received a contract to develop and produce four high-intensity longdistance receiver/transmitters for cellular telephones. Ignoring any forgetting factor effects, what should Johnson estimate time and parts costs to be for the dozen units?
