Concept explainers
To determine: The approaches that might be tried on a sample (obtained from ocean of Jupiter’s moon) to distinguish between contamination of an organism from the Earth, and a novel cellular life-form on the basis of DNA, RNA, and protein.
Introduction:
Extraterrestrial life refers to the life that did not originate from the Earth and occurs outside the Earth. There is no evidence of extraterrestrial life, but there are several places outside the Earth where there can be existence of life. For example, liquid water beneath icy layer in oceans of Europa and Enceladus, and Mars. If extraterrestrial life is present, it may be susceptible to contamination of foreign microbes from other planets, such as the Earth.
