To explain: The reason why diet deficient in zinc does not reduce the number of red blood cells, but it impairs respiratory function by reducing CO₂ output.

Introduction: The mineral zinc activates the enzymes of protein metabolism. It is a part of carbonate dehydratase and carbon dioxide transfer. It is important for the immune functions. Most carbonic anhydrase contains zinc ion in their functional site, and they are therefore classified as metalloenzymes.
