Chapter 13, Problem 4GP
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The probability of a heterozygous surviving kitten.

Introduction:

Individuals in the population carry a specific set of alleles, known as genotype. The examples of genotype are homozygous and heterozygous. The phenotype of a plant depends on its genotype and it is the trait of the individual that can be observed. An allele is said to be dominant when its effect masks the effect of the recessive allele.

Heterozygous individuals perpetuate some alleles that have lethal effects in homozygous individuals. A mutated allele (ML) associated with taillessness in Manx cats (left) is an example. Cats homozygous for this allele (MLML) typically die before birth due to severe spinal cord defects. In a case of incomplete  dominance, cats heterozygous for the ML allele and the normal, unmutated allele (M) have a short, stumpy tail or none at all. Two MLM cats mate. What is the probability that any one of their surviving kittens will be heterozygous?
In humans, the genetic disease cystic fibrosis is caused by a recessive allele (a). The normal (healthy) allele is dominant (A). What is the genotype of someone who has cystic fibrosis?   What are the two different genotypes that a healthy person could have?   If two people were both heterozygous for the cystic fibrosis gene, what fraction of their children would be likely to have this disease? Hint: Draw a Punnett square to figure it out.
In alley cats, the coat color is determined by a gene carried on the X-chromosome. At the same time, the alleles are expressed as intermediate (incomplete-dominance) inheritance. Genotypes and color are as follows: Females: X ^ b * X ^ b =yellow X^ B X ^ b = calico X ^ B * X ^ B =black Males: X ^ y * Y =yellow X ^ B * Y=bhck (a) A black cat has a litter of seven kittens: three black males, one black female and three calico females. Comment on the probable paternity of this litter and explain.
