Textbook Problem

Arrange the following 0.10M solutions in order of increasing pH.

  1. (a) NaCl
  2. (b) NH4Cl
  3. (c) HCl
  4. (d) NaCH3CO2
  5. (e) KOH

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Arrange the following 0.10M solutions in order of increasing pH.

a) NaClb) NH4Clc) HCld) NaCH3CO2e) KOH

Concept introduction:

The pH of a solution is negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration.

pH = -log[H+]

pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. Pure water is said to be neutral with pH close to 7.0 at 250C.

Explanation

a)

NaCl

NaCl dissociates into Na+ and Cl-.Na+ ions have no effect on the solution pH.

b)

NH4Cl

NH4Cl dissociates into NH4+ and Cl- ions. Here, NH4+ donate proton to water to form H3O+ therefore, the solution becomes slightly acidic.

c)

HCl

HCl is strong acid
